Description of Work Unit
The Equine Teaching Research Center is located in the Dept. of Animal Sciences. The Department of Animal Sciences has the unique mission of serving Colorado’s large and diverse livestock industries. Research, teaching and extension outreach activities in the Department of Animal Sciences focus on developing industry leaders and improving profitable production of horses and food animals through the application of science and technology, resource management and food product enhancement, with emphasis on addressing societal issues concerning food safety, product quality and value, animal care and management, and environmental impacts of animal agriculture

Position Summary
This position provides care and maintenance of horses and facilities utilized by the CSU Department of Animal Sciences/Equine Sciences program at the Equine Teaching and Research Center in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Position Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience caring for horses including feeding, providing housing, monitoring general health and providing basic veterinary care, blanketing horses, leading, walking and evaluating horses for lameness, vices, or other unwanted conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds approximately twice per day.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather, including dust, moist, hot and cold conditions.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous work experience at an equestrian boarding or training facility, equine veterinarian hospital, or equine assisted services center.

  • Provide care for ETRC horses to include feeding, watering, blanketing, wound management and well-being checks of program horses.
  • Load/Unload hay, grain, and other feed and bedding as needed.
  • Provide security and cleanliness of facility including locking and unlocking facility entrance gate and facility doors, cleans stall and overall facility.
  • Operation of heavy equipment such as skid steer and tractor utilized for dragging arenas, cleaning pens, etc.
