About the Work Unit
The mission of the Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) is to safeguard those that live, work and play in Colorado, by reducing threats to lives, property and the environment. The Division safeguards the public through: fire prevention and code enforcement; wildfire preparedness, response, suppression, coordination, and management; training and certification; public information and education; and technical assistance to local governments. The Division is composed of the Chief Administrative Office, the Center of Excellence (COE), the Fire and Life Safety Section (FLSS), the Professional Qualifications and Training Section (PQTS), and the Wildland Fire Management Section (WFMS).
The purpose of the Data Unit within the Chief Administrative Office is to collect, analyze, and interpret relevant data related to fire prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. By leveraging data-driven insights, this unit aims to enhance decision-making processes, identify trends, assess risks, and improve overall effectiveness to ultimately enhance the effectiveness of fire prevention and control efforts across Colorado.
About the Job
The primary purpose of this role is to collect and analyze various datasets related to fire prevention, investigations, risk reduction, fire control and management. This involves examining historical fire incident data, geographical information systems (GIS), and identifying trend patterns and potential areas of concern.
The data analyst plays a critical role in helping the division make informed decisions, prioritize initiatives, and ultimately reduce the impact of fires on communities and the environment. This position will support the development and implementation of a data management and visualization in support of the Division of Fire Prevention and Control and its state-wide stakeholders. This position will help inform data-driven decisions to ensure efforts are properly focused and determine if programs are effective in addressing Colorado’s fire challenges. This position will assist in enhancing access to robust, public-facing data to foster greater transparency and accountability. The position will gather data specified by the program manager and CDFPC leadership and use this data to inform policy, allocation of resources, training, effective risk reduction strategies as well as communicate with the public in collaboration with the CDFPC Public Information Officer. Research data platforms, data interfaces, how multiple federal, state and local data sources interact, use of data platforms by stakeholders, and whether current efforts are effectively meeting users’ needs. It will compile collected data and produce actionable information. The position builds the data collection process, creates dashboards and maps related products that graphically support the data collection and informs decision makers. Use research findings to inform the data platform’s content. Identify audiences that need the data and determine what data is most relevant to them (fire service, public, elected officials, media, etc.) This position builds the data collection process, creates dashboards and informs decision makers.
