Description

This is not your typical civil engineering job.

As a Project Engineer in our Project Coordination Office, you will have the chance to work alongside the City of Chicago Department of Transportation and major utilities to apply leading edge technologies (dotMaps and Chistreetwork) to optimize infrastructure management practices. The effective management of our nation’s infrastructure represents an important aspect of where the future of cities is heading, and you will have a first-hand look at helping to shape this. As Chicago continues to be a leader in infrastructure management and project coordination, you will have a groundbreaking role merging your expertise with aiding in the brainstorm and launch of exciting technology solutions. You will be part of a unique team that successfully coordinates and participates in the execution of infrastructure improvement projects with other engineers, planners and coordinators. This position will provide the opportunity to review and provide input on thousands of projects, and the ability to solve technical problems and steward solutions through the delivery process.

The primary responsibility of this role is to be involved in the identification and resolution of utility construction conflicts for all work happening within city limits. This includes analyzing project schedules and plans to determine opportunities for cost savings and resolving schedule, restoration and special event conflicts.

The Project Coordination Office is responsible for:

  • Infrastructure management
  • Enhancing functionality dotMaps/Chistreetwork code by SADA, partnered with Google
  • Innovating new suggested business rules, workflow and processes
  • Technical assistance for Public Policy (CDOT Rules and Regulations)
  • Capital improvement planning
  • Conflict resolution
  • Public way coordination
  • Maintenance of traffic and detour plan review
  • Permit review
  • Special event and construction coordination
  • Project sequencing
  • Data analysis
  • Technology development, management, and mapping
  • Technical writing
  • Technical reviews

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and/or coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.
  • Ability to communicate externally with multiple technical and non-technical stakeholders in an effective and concise manner for the coordination of Public/Private Capital Improvement Projects.
  • Aid in the development, coordination and management of project schedules.
  • Ability to quickly adapt and make well-informed independent decisions.
  • Time management and the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Ability to process and make sense of large sets of project data presented both visually through a map and through spreadsheet format.
  • Develop or expand on technical civil engineering practices for work within the City of Chicago.
  • Receive technical guidance for unusual or complex problems and supervisory approval of proposed project plans.
  • Assist in the technical review of civil engineering plans and specifications.
  • Review civil design plans and specifications for both public and private sector clients.
  • Review technical documents for compliance with state and local codes, laws, ordinances and agency requirements.
  • Experience in Civil engineering, urban planning, utility coordination and/or program management experience background is a plus.
  • Keep Project Manager informed of workload and any changes to project scope or additional services.
  • Perform his/her duties safely.

Qualifications


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year university.
  • 1 – 5 years of experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) or Professional Engineer (P.E.) a plus.
