General Description
Under the direction of the Dean of Math, Science, and Engineering, the MESA Program Director serves as the primary coordinator of the MESA program, advancing student success, equity, inclusion, and belonging in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education through participation in MESA activities and support services for students who seek to transfer to a four-year institution. The continuation of this position is contingent on continued funding.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The MESA Program Director is responsible for the daily management of the MESA program, including planning, developing, implementing and coordinating program objectives in compliance with Title III and internal policies and procedures, overseeing grant activities following defined action plans, tracking funds, and submitting periodic reports to the California Community College Chancellors Office (CCCCO). The MESA Program Director performs a variety of professional, administrative, and programmatic work in support of assigned programs including serving as a liaison to District staff, community partners, and outside agencies. This position is categorically funded.

Job Duties
Representative Duties:
  • Plan, develop, and implement MESA program goals, objectives, policies and priorities, oversee the daily operations of the MESA center and ensure a student-centered and inclusive environment.
  • Monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery methods and procedures; recommend and administer program policies, procedures and services; recommend appropriate services and staffing.
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of staff assigned to the grant; interview and participates in selecting employees; train, counsel, and discipline personnel according to established policies and procedures.
  • Direct and ensure the reporting, updating, and maintenance of student records, files, and reports regarding academic progress, contractual agreements, and program requirements.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, and administrators to assist in improved delivery of services to students, promote an understanding of MESA services, and to build a program of academic rigor.
  • Develop, schedule, and coordinate student orientation, tutoring, and study programs, including academic excellence workshops, career advising, and leadership training; and recruit and schedule guest speakers.
  • Establish, maintain, and promote a MESA student club or similar organization to create connections with groups that serve students historically underrepresented in STEM.
  • Coordinate with counselors and Math, Science, Engineering and Computer Science faculty to cluster students into STEM classes as well as labs, workshops, and discussion groups.
  • Collaborate with the Math, Science, Engineering and Computer Science faculty to offer Friday Night Lab activities, workshops, and STEM student engagement projects.
  • Conduct in-reach student recruitment on campus and outreach student recruitment at partner high schools, emphasizing outreach efforts within the communities with the most need for STEM education; track the success of outreach efforts and provide strategic planning for growth and improvement of outreach.
  • Collaborate with the Welcome Center Director and staff in recruitment and outreach efforts.
  • Establish and maintain communication with four-year institutions to encourage the formation of a pipeline and pathway for student transfer; develop, schedule, and coordinate informational sessions and workshops related to the transfer process and continued academic success. Collaborate with the transfer center staff and counselors on transfer efforts.
  • Establish a local business and industry council that includes small and large business industry leaders and potentially local/state representatives in the District service area; work with local businesses and industry to provide opportunities such as internships, job shadowing, field trips, and exposure to the industry environment
  • Create a District-wide council that includes the faculty sponsors, students, and representatives from relevant departments/programs that can contribute to the success of MESA students; solicit feedback and plan for future semesters or renewal process.
  • Oversee and participate in the development and administration of the program budgets; ensure program expenditures and cost estimates are adequately documented and monitored throughout the program area; review and approve program expenditures.
  • Prepare and present program outcome reports to District leadership and constituency groups, community stakeholders, and California Community College Chancellor's Office (CCCCO).
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of trends in the MESA program and represent the District at annual statewide meetings and other staff development activities related to the MESA program.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):
Any combination equivalent to:
  • A Master's degree from an accredited institution and successful experience in an educational environment. Experience in management, specifically within similar grant programs is highly desirable AND
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, identity, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
  • Valid California driver's license.

    • Conduct and facilitate meetings effectively.
    Working Conditions:
    Environment
    • Outdoor environment.
    • Travel to multiple school sites/agencies within the District boundaries. Domestic travel may be required.
    • Occasional extended working weekdays and weekends required.
    • Work under steady pressure with frequent interruptions and a high degree of public contract by phone or in person.
    Physical Abilities
    • Ability to communicate to provide information over the phone and in person with students/employers/employees/public.
    • Ability to read documents.
    • Ability to sit and stand for extended period of time.
    • Ability to remember key information and concentrate for long periods of time.
    • Ability to operate a computer keyboard.
