This is a part-time position

This position performs its duties on both the Kentfield and Indian Valley (Novato) campuses, so if not already residing within the Bay Area, the successful candidate must be willing to relocate.

POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the direction of the Director of Student Activities & Advocacy, the Basic Needs Coordinator will be responsible for planning, organizing and promoting food access and other basic needs for College of Marin students. This includes the coordination of the COM Cupboard - SF/Marin Food Bank distribution and COM food pantry supplies, liaison to CalFresh in Marin County, and collaboration with mental health and housing agencies in Marin County. The Basic Needs Coordinator will work with community organizations to obtain resources for students to ensure student wellness, success, retention, and completion.
For this position, we are seeking an individual who understands the challenges faced by historically underrepresented, low income, and first-generation students, and who can help our campus meet our goal of fostering a campus climate that strives for equity and is supportive of the multiple experiences of our students. We are seeking someone who is rooted in anti-racist and social justice practices, thrives in a collaborative work environment, embraces independent judgment and creativity, takes initiative, and is self-driven to maximize student engagement.
Essential Functions
  • Manage operations of the COM Cupboard food distribution, including the produce stand and additional pantry offerings. Inventory and organize donated food items and other supplies.
  • Coordinate and direct volunteers and schedule appropriate staffing of the COM Cupboard food distribution.
  • Develop, coordinate, promote the COM Cupboard, events related to basic needs, and other resources.
  • Deliver workshops to students, staff, and faculty to create awareness of basic needs services.
  • Design and produce print and electronic media to promote and procure resources and services for COM students. Prepare and distribute professional communications to college employees, students, administrators, and community partners.
  • Implement program policies and directives according to District, federal or State guidelines.
  • Assist with research, monitor, and prepare data and reports required by the college, funding agencies, community partners, and/or Chancellor's Office. Participate on program reviews; assure program compliance with federal or State program guidelines.
  • Work with assigned administrator to establish contacts with local businesses, industries, organizations, community-based agencies, and other educational institutions to procure donations and advocacy for student basic needs to develop the COM Cupboard, establish new offerings to meet basic needs of COM students, and related programs.
  • Prepare funds applications; prepare grant requests and serve as the primary contact for large programs or multi-programs.
  • Provide intakes and referrals to on and off-campus resources (i.e., food, shelter, and transportation, mental health care, alcohol/substance use treatment, legal assistance, etc.) Maintain a referral network to provide resources to students in need.
  • Review budgets and projections with assigned administrator. Input requisitions and prepare reports as needed that evaluate and demonstrate program effectiveness. Assure program expenditures are within allocated budgets; propose budget changes and participate in project budget applications as necessary.
  • Serve as liaison between program personnel, participants, clients, administrators, faculty and students; provide information, program requirements and other pertinent information.
  • Develop, recommend and implement program plans and objectives; coordinate delivery of services to program participants; assure participation guidelines are followed.
  • Operate a computer and other office equipment as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
  • Assist Student Activities and Advocacy office with departmental services/programs (i.e., College-related student equity initiatives and programming) and technological requirements as needed.
  • Work with the COM Care team to create intervention support and address student needs.
Requirements & Desirables
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor's Degree with study in job related area and job related experience; or
  • Any combination of education and training equivalent to (2) two years of college-level coursework from an accredited institution in a related field and (2) two years of responsible experience working in higher education; and
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of and experience with basic needs initiatives locally and/or nationally
  • Knowledge of Federal and State program rules, practices and procedures
  • Safe food handling guidelines
  • Experience working with a diverse community, including different racial and ethnic backgrounds, socioeconomic levels, cultural upbringings, sexual orientation and gender identity, physical abilities, and nationalities.
  • Knowledge of marketing and project management practices
  • Familiarity with State Education Code, Federal and State laws and other applicable laws and practices for community college students is desirable

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Prior to employment, the selected candidate will be required to complete the following:

  • COVID-19 Vaccination Status: All employees new to the District who access campuses or other District facilities, and/or participate in off-site work in-person for the District, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, prior to employment unless approved as exempt due to verified medical or religious reasons (as defined in federal or state laws and regulations).
  • California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
  • DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the MCCD requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency. SALARY INFORMATION
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Salary Range: CSEA 127
Starting Salary Range: $39.39 to $43.45 per month (Step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY & RETIREMENT PLAN
Employees in classifications represented by the California School Employees' Association (CSEA) Chapter 196 and are required to comply fully with the CSEA/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. CSEA employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 7% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.
