The Financial Controller position at Coherent Aerospace & Defense (A&D) is a very critical position. The individual in this position ensures all financial transactions are processed timely and accurately in compliance with current company policy and approved processes. This position is also responsible for stewardship of the company assets and General Ledger. The Controller is responsible for ensuring that the books and records are in compliance with GAAP, Government Contracts, company policies and procedures. This position is accountable to ensure that business systems, processes and an organization are in place to uncover and report both short-term and long-term financial risk, and deliver relevant and timely business information to all areas of the organization.

  • Manages all aspects of the Accounting functions at A&D including planning, organizing, directing, staffing, coordinating, reporting and financial analysis for this activity.
  • Responsible for the timely and accurate reporting of financial statements including certification of quarterly and year-end financial statements. Maintains internal control system compliant with Sarbanes Oxley requirements.\
  • Maintains A&D’s General Ledger and cost accounting systems which support compliance with the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and U.S government Cost Accounting Standards (CAS). This includes ensuring that all transactions are processed timely and accurately according to the company’s policies, procedures, and disclosed cost accounting practices as described in the company’s DS-1 filing. All transactions and reconciliations require immediate access to supporting documentation for Internal Audit, External Financial Audit, and External Government audit program. Details and classifications must be maintained to properly support annual Incurred Cost Proposals preparation and submission to the U.S. government agencies (DCAA and DCMA).
  • Supports all departments and senior management with timely and accurate cost, performance and other relevant information necessary for sound near term and strategic decision making.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

Accounting Finance 75%

  • Ensure accurate/timely financial statements and related analysis is prepared monthly in accordance with company policy and procedures. 
  • Ensure transactions such as Billing, Collections, Accounts Payable, Payroll, Expense Reporting, PCard Purchases, General Journal Entries, Accruals, Allocations, and all other financial transactions are classified and processed timely and accurately.
  • Ensure all Balance Sheet Accounts are reconciled timely and accurately. Ensure reconciling differences are researched, accurately assessed, and dispositioned timely.
  • Prepare monthly analytics and reports for Business Unit and corporate.
  • Ensure cost accounting system is operating accurately to measure performance variances, and analysis is conducted to adequately explain all significant variances.
  • Effectively manage working capital including Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable.
  • Ensure capital spending is appropriated, accounted for, placed into service, depreciated, and disposed of according to company policy and procedures.
  • Ensure supporting documentation in accordance with company policy and procedures are readily available to others in support of Internal audits, external financial audits, and government audits.
  • Ensure Accounting team is adequately trained, their processes documented, and they fully understand the processes they are performing including why their process is required and the impact if it is not performed according to documented policies and procedures.
  • Ensure Financial Performance Reports are complete and accurate. They must be prepared consistently with prior reports and in accordance with company policies and procedures. An analysis of the reported information is required to succinctly identify key relevant information contained in the reports.
  • Ensure all information restriction requirements are followed including non-disclosure of restricted information to unauthorized persons and document marking. This includes information restrictions such as ITAR, PPI, Proprietary Information, Classified Information, Confidential Unclassified Information, PCI, and other forms of confidential information.

Sarbanes-Oxley 15%

  • Approval authority according to the Matrix of Authority is understood and transactions are reviewed to ensure compliance with Authority Matrix.
  • Observations and findings from various audit teams are appropriately addressed and resolved.
  • Review and approval of reconciliation and journal entries as identified in accounting procedures. Ensure reconciling differences are researched and dispositioned timely.
  • Ensure Hyperion is loaded properly and timely.
  • Ensure ERP system access review and approval is performed accurately and timely.
  • Ensure Financial Analytics are completed and reported accurately and timely.

Administration 10%

  • Performance reviews are completed 100% on-time in a thorough, accurate and equitable manner.
  • Financial transactions such as supplier payments, employee payroll and bonus payments, customer billing and collection and all other financial transactions are processed timely, accurately, and in accordance with company policy and procedures.
  • All other special projects as assigned are completed according to level of expectation.

Education & Experience

B.S. degree with concentration in Accounting. Strong accounting skills with a good working knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting requirements. Greater than 5 years of Controllership experience in a manufacturing environment is a good substitute for CPA or advanced degree. 

Masters, CPA, and/or CMA preferred

Experience with ERP configuration/implementation

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of FAR, CAS, and GAAP
  • Expert user of Excel.
  • Solid understanding of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and business process in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in improving processes by streamlining and accelerating cycle times utilizing lean principles. 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong cost accounting system design experience
