Description
Provides direct and indirect patient care in the clinic setting. Provides care that reflects initiative, flexibility, and responsibility indicative of professional expectation with minimum supervision. Communicates with office physicians about changes in the patient's status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies. The individual in this position needs to be able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Vocational Nursing or an accredited Medical Assistant training program.
  • Current licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse by the Texas Board of Nursing or certified/registered Medical Assistant
  • Previous experience in general nursing preferred; previous experience in a family practice setting highly desired.
  • Current BLS
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR L.V.N.
Provides direct patient care under the supervision of an RN, evaluates outcomes, consults with other health team members as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
•Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment, under the supervision of a RN, on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
•Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
•Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
•Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
•Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific to the standard of care for patient's age.
•Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
•Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.
•Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers and physicians.
•Demonstrates the ability to assist physicians with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of a RN.
•Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.
•Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of the plan of care.
•Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching, as appropriate.
•Demonstrates ability to revise plan of care as indicated by the patient's response to treatment.
•Demonstrates the ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure.
•Consults other departments of the clinic, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
•Meets current documentation standards and policies.
•Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.
•Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
•Demonstrates knowledge of lab requirements, requisitions.
•Maintains established outpatient clinic policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental, and infection prevention and control standards.
•Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with outpatient clinic standards.
•Answers telephone calls in a professional manner; refers patient problems to outpatient clinic physician; schedules patient appointments.
•Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.
•Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
•Maintains a good working relationship with all staff members of the clinic.
•Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
•Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
•Response to the patient is appropriate in emergency or physically distressful situations.
•Performs other duties as assigned within the LVN/LPN scope of practice.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR MEDICAL ASSISTANT
Rooms patients
•Takes and records patient vital signs and medical histories
•Prepares patients for examination
•Administers medications as direct by physician
•Explains treatment procedures to patients as directed by physician
•Assists the physician during exams
•Instructs patients about medication and special diets as directed by physician
•Transmits prescription refills as directed
•Calls patients for follow-up appointments
•Assists with calls for patients for RQI follow-up
•Assists with turning rooms over; clean rooms; pull table paper with folded edge at foot of table; wipe down counters and table
•Meets current documentation standards and policies
•Demonstrates knowledge of lab requirements, requisitions

•Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology. Familiarity with health care systems, regulations, policies, and functions.
•Understanding of documentation standards.
•Knowledge of equipment, supplies, and materials needed for medical treatment.
•Understanding of basic laboratory procedures including preparation and screening.
•Skill in reading and following written and oral medical orders.
•Skill in handling a number of tasks simultaneously.
•Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and diverse patient populations.
•Ability to perform mathematical calculations for drug dosages.
•Skill in maintaining a clutter-free, organized exam and nursing area.
•Ability to respond in a flexible manner to changing workload or patient assignments.
•Ability to use department supplies and equipment in a cost-efficient, effective manner.
•Ability to analyze situations and respond appropriately
•Basic Microsoft computer skills or the ability to learn such skills.
