Description

As part of our efforts to address the workforce shortage and racial disparities in HIV/STI/HCV prevention and treatment, Codman Square Health Center will host its inaugural medical student internship in the Summer of 2024. This internship provides two HBCU medical students with an opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of primary care and HIV/STI/HCV care in community health centers and academic medical centers. Students should have a vested interest in community health, sexual and reproductive health, and/or HIV care.

Key Program Elements:

• Summer interns will spend time shadowing primary care, HIV, sexual health, and substance use disorders clinicians at Codman Square Health Center and at Boston University Medical Center Infectious Disease Clinic.

• Interns will visit local STI clinics and HIV community-based organizations e.g Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Boston Public Health Commission.

• Working with a mentor, interns will spend time working on a quality improvement project related to HIV, sexual health, or LGBTQ health for presentation at the end of the program. It is highly recommended that participants do some background preparation before starting the program to determine their areas of interest or specific project ideas.

Interns will also participate in didactic training on HIV/STI/HCV, healthcare inequities, and diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Qualifications

Candidate Eligibility Criteria:

• Eligible candidates must identify as an underrepresented minority HBCU medical student
• Demonstrated commitment to serving medically underserved communities

Racial/ethnic groups that are designated as underrepresented in medicine include:

• African American or Black
• Hispanic or Latino
• American Indian or Alaska Native
• Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander
• Southeast Asian

Program Dates: May 20th, 2024- June 28, 2024 (program start dates can be flexible for extenuating circumstances)

Stipend: $6,000 for medical student interns
