Description

Reporting to the Medical Director for the Practice, the Department Medical Director (DMD) is a practicing clinician, who fosters the success of the medical providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants) in their department. The primary areas of focus:

  1. To be a conduit of bi-directional communication between the departments providers and the Senior Medical Leadership Team.
  2. To represent practicing providers in the development of successful medical and team based care models and protocols.
  3. To ensure provider performance on the organizational clinical quality, operational, compliance, and fiscal goals through education, training, feedback, and modeling successful workflows and practices.
  4. To provide supervision for department providers in collaboration with the Senior Medical Leadership.

The DMD will set the tone for high quality of care, excellent customer service, and continuous improvement. The DMD collaborates with the other department managers (nurse, operations, behavioral health) to ensure the successful management of the department.

Primary Responsibilities:

Communication The DMD fosters bi-directional communication between the departments providers and the Senior Medical Leadership Team (the Medical director for the Practice, the Medical Director for ACO development and Population Health, and the Chief Medical Officer).

  • Collaborate with the CMO and Medical Director of the Practice to support the clinical, operational and programmatic objectives of the clinical practice.
  • Attend Medical Leadership Meeting, Provider Meeting, Provider Trainings, Department Meetings, pertinent organizational managers meetings, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Lead Department Provider Meeting, including agenda setting, facilitation, setting of actions and timelines, and ensure completion of minutes.
  • Co-lead Department Provider & Staff Meeting with Department Nursing, Operations, and in applicable departments, BH Leaders.
  • Co-lead Department Quality Improvement Meetings with Department Nurse Leader.
  • Meet weekly or every other week with Department Nursing, Operations, and in applicable departments, BH Leaders.
  • Meet weekly or every other week for Supervision with Medical Director for Practice
  • Update department providers on topics from Leadership meetings and communications.
  • Provide feedback from department providers to Leadership during meetings and through other communications.
  • Responsible for addressing questions and concerns from department providers.

Clinical Representation of Providers in Development and Implementation of Practice Model The DMD represents practicing providers in the development of successful medical and team based care models and protocols.

  • Support the Medical Director for the Practice and the Medical Director of Quality & Patient Safety in the development of clinical protocols and workflows to achieve organizational goals.
  • Draft selected clinical protocols and workflows as mutually agreed upon by the DMD and the Medical Director for the Practice and the Medical Director of Quality & Patient Safety.
  • Obtain input from department providers on clinical protocols and workflows.
  • Lead department provider implementation of new and existing clinical protocols and workflows.
  • Model and mentor providers on team based care models and behaviors.
  • In collaboration with other department leaders, recommend new initiatives for the department or medical practice and ensure alignment with the organizational strategic priorities.
  • In collaboration with other department leaders, implement approved protocols based on best practices and evidence-based care as mutually agreed upon with the Medical Director for the Practice and the CMO.
  • Lead and participate in performance improvement initiatives as mutually agreed upon with the Medical Director for the Practice and the CMO.
  • Participate in grant writing, grant review, and grant compliance as mutually agreed upon with the Medical Director for the Practice and the CMO.

Ensure Department Achievement of Organizational Goals The DMD maximizes provider performance on organizational clinical quality, operational, and fiscal goals through education, training, feedback, and modeling successful workflows and practices.

  • Educate department providers on organizational goals.
  • Review department and provider performance on organizational goals utilizing the Provider/Team Scorecard and other analytics.
  • Utilize department meetings and other means of communication to inspire providers and staff to achieve organizational goals.
  • Model successful provider teamwork, team based care, and performance on organizational goals.
  • Provide feedback to providers on their performance on clinical quality, operational and fiscal goals.
  • Provide elbow-to-elbow support on processes, protocols, and workflows, to assist department providers in achieving targets for organizational goals.
  • Work with department providers to identify and address barriers to success.
  • Collaborate with the department nurse and operations leaders to identify and address barriers to department and provider team (e.g. dyad) success.
  • Identify and provide feedback on interdepartmental, interdisciplinary, and organizational barriers to Medical director for the Practice, and when appropriate, collaborate with other leaders to address those barriers.
  • Support the Medical Director for the Practice and the CMO, and collaborate with Nurse, Operations and BH Leaders:
    • in the establishment of appropriate staffing levels (providers & support staff) within organizational parameters, that support team based care and appropriate provider support;
    • in preparing department budget annually
    • in resolving issues between medical providers and other staff.

Qualifications


Provider Supervision The DMD provides supervision for department providers (Physician, Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant) and medical specialty providers assigned to the department, in collaboration with the Medical Director for the Practice and the CMO.

  • Complete Annual Review (and 6 month review for new providers) with support from the Medical Director for the Practice within established timeframes.
  • In conjunction with Medical Director for Practice and CMO, support Operations Leaders and Administrative Support Staff to ensure that providers are in compliance with Health Center policies, procedures, and standards of care (including timely completion of HR, compliance, risk management training; payroll, mandatory trainings, and performance competencies).
  • Collaborate with Medical Director for the Practice and the CMO on provider performance issues, including identifying and addressing provider deficiencies, delinquencies and HR concerns.
  • Support the Medical Director of Practice, the CMO, and Human Resources in disciplinary action for providers as requested by supervisor.
  • Collaborate with the Medical Director for the Practice to determine department provider growth plan, provider recruitment, and hiring.
  • Oversee orientation and training of new department providers.
  • Assign mentors for new physicians and supervisors for NPs and PAs.
  • Oversee Medical, NP, and PA student assignments directly or by delegate as mutually agreed upon with Medical Director for the Practice.
  • Oversee the department resident provider practice directly or by delegate as mutually agreed upon with Medical Director for the Practice.
  • Support operations team in developing schedule templates and booking guidance for providers.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • MD, DO, NP, or PA licensed to practice medicine in the state of Massachusetts and a practicing clinician at Codman Square Health Center.

Experience:

  • 2 years of clinical experience
  • 1 year of management experience preferred
  • Experience working in the Primary Care setting and at a Community Health Center
