Coconino County is Hiring an Assistant Medical Examiner- Health and Human Services (0124) Near Flagstaff, AZ

Under general direction, performs work of considerable difficulty in postmortem examinations to determine the cause and manner of death and, if necessary, assists law enforcement in the identity of deceased persons; performs related work as assigned.
Note: This position works under the direction of the appointed Chief Medical Examiner.
Note: The salary range for this position is $200,000-$230,000.

  • Performs timely postmortem examinations, retaining samples, specimens, and tissues necessary for analysis, examination, and documentation in accordance with applicable laws and standard practices of forensic pathology as available resources allow.

  • Prepares written autopsy reports opining the cause and manner of death
  • Prepares and maintains records, reports, and other documentation as well as physical evidence
  • Assists with Request for Proposals (RFP) specifications for outside services and grant proposals in accordance with County policies
  • Ensures contactor duties compliance
  • Confers with law enforcement officials and attorneys in criminal and civil cases, and provides expert testimony
  • Visits the scene of death or discovery of remains to provide professional assistance, if requested
  • Ensures proper handling of organs, tissues, bodies, items found on or around bodies, and collections of unclaimed bodies, in accordance with legal requirements
  • Assists with the preparation and administration of the operational budget
  • Participates in county and state fatality review panels and mass fatality planning•
  •  Supervises staff
Essential functions of the positions include driving, standing and walking; lifting and carrying 50 lbs (preparing for examinations); familiarity and use of autopsy and radiology equipment; pushing/pulling 150 lbs; working and communicating with other people, including family members, law enforcement, funeral directors, and other agencies; repetitive motion (elbow/shoulder); vision acuity; documentation of examinations; finger dexterity; and familiarity with computer technology and data entry.
  • Valid license to practice medicine in the state of Arizona at the time of appointment.
  • Certification in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology (ABP).
  • Certification in forensic pathology by the ABP. If eligible at the time of appointment, FP certification to be completed within two years of hire.
  • Maintenance of certification of time-limited certificates must be continued throughout employment.
  •  Valid Arizona driver’s license.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess an Arizona MD/DO license and be Board Certified or eligible for Board certification in forensic pathology.

This position is exempt from overtime.

This position is safety sensitive. 

• Considerable knowledge of:
- Pathology and forensic pathological procedures
- Laws, statutes and policies relating to postmortem examinations
- Morgue administrative practices and procedures
- Human anatomy and autopsy procedures
- Principles and practices of data collection, statistical analysis and report writing
- Safe and proper handling of body fluids, tissues, and other body parts
 
• Some knowledge of:
- Governmental budgeting practices, including purchasing and contract management
- Personnel management
 
• Considerable skill in:
- Performing autopsies
 
• Ability to:
- Prepare detailed technical reports
- Perform complex postmortem examinations to determine a cause and manner of death
- Maintain accurate records
- Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies and the public
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing with law enforcement officers, family members, and mortuary personnel
