Cobalt Cattle Company LLC is Hiring a Feed Manager Near Leoti, KS

Position: Feed Manager
Overview: Manages the Feed Department to maximize cattle performance, feed efficiencies, and profitability, through successfully directing and coordinating activities of employees who are engaged in the daily feeding of livestock, repair, maintenance, and daily operations of a feed mill and feed delivery.

  • Manage, lead, and develop all feed employees.
  • Interviews and train new employees through training, then plans, assigns, directs work.
  • Directs supervisory responsibilities in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Works closely with consultants to optimize cattle performance and health.
  • Monitors feed intakes, bunk conditions, cattle behavior to feed presentation and schedules ration step-up programs, based on variables such as days on feed, gender, weather, breed, etc.
  • Reviews daily agenda for pen ships, moves, and transfers.
  • Communicates yard issues, i.e., cattle inventory, cattle condition, pen maintenance, safety issues, etc., to appropriate personnel.
  • Ensures that newly received and re-implant cattle are fed in a timely manner by coordinating feeding schedule with the cattle department.
  • Project capital expenditures for feeding department and prepares and maintains the annual feed department budget.
  • Manages expenses by studying historical data, anticipating needs, researching costs, designing inventory systems, determining inventory levels and approving orders.
  • Maintains cattle feeding records by compiling, entering, and analyzing information.
  • Enters rations into the batching system and creates and enters the feeding schedule before each round of feeding.
  • Prepare and follow the preventative maintenance schedule for the feeding department.
  • Coordinates with the Yard department on the service schedules of all feeding equipment.
  • Prepares and coordinates feeding and milling schedules with the Mill Manager.
  • Evaluates personnel for job performance and provides annual performance review, as well as rewarding and disciplining employees and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Ensure housekeeping is maintained in pickups, trucks, and feed office area.
  • Ensure compliance with all OSHA/Safety procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work environment
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
Physical demands
  • Regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
  • Frequently required to talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.

Required Education And Experience
  • College Degree with 5 years of successful experience in a cattle feeding environment.
  • Animal husbandry skills, knowledge of cattle breeds and characteristics.
  • Previous supervisory or management experience.
  • A good understanding of OSHA/HACCP guidelines is needed as well as an understanding of a cattle accounting system.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software, Spreadsheet software, accounting software, and Internet software.
  • Strong MS Office experience and proficiency with developing and using spreadsheets and/or databases.
