Job Summary: A Registered Nurse responsible and accountable for providing direct age specific patient care to assigned patients during the shift. The Registered Nurse follows the nursing process in the delivery of patient care. The Registered Nurse is responsible for the coordination of the team approach to patient care. The Registered Nurse provides clinical leadership for other nursing staff as assigned and performs related duties as required. Supervises LVN’s, CNA’s Unit Secretary, and other ancillary nursing personnel involved in the delivery of patient care. Reports to Charge RN / PCC and Nursing Director

Essential Job Duties:

  • Demonstrates competency in assessment skills for the patient population served including but not limited to:

o Risk Behaviors, EDU level and needs, Psychosocial needs, Clinical care

  • Demonstrates ability to plan and coordinate care with patient/ significant others as well as other members of the health care team
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient care problems and determine nursing interventions utilizing critical thinking in compliance with hospital policies and procedures, acceptable standards of practice and regulatory standards.
  • Provides and evaluates patient care throughout the continuum
  • Serves as a role model for the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization and fulfills other job duties as requested within Scope of Practice
  • Maintains current competencies as well as updated knowledge in specific area of practice

Requirements:

  • Bachelors degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year of current experience in area applying for 
  • Current RN in good standing with the California Board of Nursing
  • Current BLS for Healthcare provider card
  • Current area specific certification required (i.e NALS, PALS, ACLS, NRP, AB508)

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information, and to be easily understood through verbal communication in the English language. Bilingual skills (Spanish) preferred.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, and distance. Ability to perform upper level mathematical operations, including algebra and geometry, frequent distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory and factor analysis.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee is regularly required to lift, push and/or pull weights in excess of 10 pounds. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds, with assistance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Summary:

This position will perform a variety of functions for the assigned shift including, but not limited to, serving as a clinical resource to Access Services to determine that admitting criteria are met for inpatient admissions, conduct license nurse consultation with referring facilities, provide evaluations to patients that present to the hospital lobby, facilitate triage and transfer of patients to other facilities. In addition, the position will be responsible for maintaining bed availability status and performing various nursing functions as specified by the House Supervisor. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current, valid CA LVN license
  • Two years of progressive proven clinical experience in an acute psychiatric and/or chemical dependency hospital

Responsibilities: 

  • Effectively screens patients for medical considerations to determine appropriate disposition.
  • Conducts nurse-to-nurse consultation with referring facilities in a timely manner.
  • Performs initial screening and evaluation of lobby walk-ins in a timely manner.
  • Effectively assists the House Supervisor with triage process.
  • Assists nursing units with initial nursing assessments as needed.
  • Obtains initial authorization for managed care admissions originating in the Hospital lobby in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates awareness of and sensitivity to the rights of patients/SO and uphold those rights as identified within the facility and by the California Department of Mental Health.
  • Develops and maintains working relationships with nursing units, Access Services and other members of the Hospital staff.
  • Effectively collaborates with House Supervisor to determine current and accurate bed status.
  • Assists Access Services staff with phone intake in a effective manner.
  • Notifies all denials due to Medi-Cal considerations to on-call Nursing Administrative staff.
  • Serves on committees, task forces and work groups on a voluntary and appointed basis at the department and hospital level.
  • Attends monthly Access Services department meetings, House Supervisors meetings, and daily communication meetings.
