Job Description The New York Times is an industry leader in visual journalism, excelling in graphics and design, photography and video. The Graphics team at The New York Times is looking for an experienced editor to guide visual and data-driven approaches to news and enterprise reporting. You will be part of the leadership team responsible for developing and executing the strategy when it comes to news and enterprise approaches for the Graphics desk. You will conceive of new lines of reporting, oversee fast-turn graphics projects, push lines of enterprise and edit breaking news on deadline. The Graphics team is a close-knit group of visual thinkers with a shared vision to creatively cover the news and develop design solutions in a collaborative setting. This editor will have strong news judgment and will primarily work with small teams of visualization experts to create stories. Some projects will involve leading teams that span multiple desks in the newsroom, which will include providing guidance and vision for a group with diverse journalistic skills and experience. Responsibilities: Bring story ideas every day. You’ll be a part of the desk’s leadership, running coverage across a range of subjects. You’ll guide our visual journalists as they pursue sources and stories, and you’ll decide how to shape our visual report. Create and edit visuals at an expert level. You should have experience building graphics and visual stories, and have an understanding of how to help others craft this kind of work. Edit and shape stories that combine graphics and narrative text. Lead teams of journalists in creating visual stories. Coach visual journalists to improve their reporting. Bring a thoughtful eye for matching talent to stories, and recognize when a project can be a growth opportunity for one of our journalists. What the Earthquake Destroyed in the Heart of One Turkish City Dissecting Elon Musk’s Tweets: Memes, Rants, Private Parts and an Echo Chamber How to Raise $89 Million in Small Donations, and Make It Disappear Where New York’s Asian Neighborhoods Shifted to the Right Basic Qualifications: Minimum combined 5 years of experience producing or editing graphics or other visual journalism Demonstrated ability to execute or coach others to execute striking and sophisticated visual work (design work and/or visualization work) Demonstrated track record in leading collaborative teams. Deep familiarity of a variety of visualization forms, including charts, maps and 3-D modeling. Sharp design instincts and ability to visually elevate creative work. Preferred Qualifications: Familiarity with ai2html, web development, and data analysis techniques Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in fast-moving, unpredictable news and production environments. Attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills. Commitment to The New York Times mission and values. The annual base pay salary for this role is between $140,000.00 and $165,000.00.
