Job Description The International desk is looking for a talented, experienced and versatile Deputy Editor, based in New York City. This editor will play a pivotal role in the leadership of the desk and the journalism it produces. This is a chance to join a collegial, committed and talented team of reporters and editors who have a history of award-winning work and are eager to experiment with how to tell stories and deliver news from around the world to a global audience. The deputy’s main responsibility will be to build and lead the desk’s approach to explanatory journalism, finding ways to break down complex stories and help new readers catch up on major storylines. The goal is to make our work more accessible to more people, by leveraging the expertise of our correspondents, thinking creatively about how best to explain the ideas behind events, encouraging clearer writing and taking greater advantage of graphics and visuals. We are looking for someone with a diverse toolkit of skills.The deputy editor also will be responsible for helping lead the broader report, shaping coverage and collaborating with colleagues around the world. The editor must be able to plan and execute high-quality journalism, to think and communicate clearly on stories and coverage lines and to champion our reporting on all platforms. The ideal candidate would be a journalistic leader with strong people management skills, excellent news judgment, an entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for serving readers. Communication and collaboration are important, as is flexibility in a constantly changing and fast-paced news environment. Main responsibilities include: Run the desk coverage for our entire international report and communicate with the Seoul and London hubs Define and lead our approach to explanatory journalism across the desk with editors and correspondents Generate story ideas and help drive daily news coverage and enterprise stories Ensure that security guidance is sought and followed in assignments Elevate and edit stories that demonstrate solid news judgment – from the immediacy of live briefings and spot news stories to longer-term news features and ambitious enterprise Juggle multiple coverage priorities across numerous regions; supervise and work with editors and reporters to shape stories and bring them to life Think creatively about new ways to tell stories and be willing to learn how to execute those storytelling techniques Collaborate across newsroom desks (e.g. Business, Visuals, Culture, etc.) on major coverage lines and work with the Standards team to ensure we’re maintaining high-quality journalism Communicate with the masthead and desk leadership about editorial priorities, feedback on stories and coverage lines Lead and inspire a team of talented editors and reporters; coach, develop and recruit talent across the desk; and work with Culture and Careers on initiatives Work with reporters and editors to conceptualize stories, guide revisions, and ensure content reaches the widest possible audience Effectively collaborate with leaders and colleagues outside the newsroom (e.g. HR, Global Mobility) Maintain the ethical standards of The Times in all published material; be the point of contact for questions about sourcing and independence Basic Qualifications: 5-7 years of leadership experience, including managing other editors, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team At least 10 years of experience writing and editing news, enterprise and other story forms At least 10 years of experience assigning stories and directing coverage Experience dealing with management, staff and sources in a highly professional manner and the capacity to collaborate and influence across desks Impeccable news judgment and the confidence to carry it out Preferred Qualifications: An appreciation of The Times’ culture (values and behaviors), writing style and commitment to journalistic standards and ethics A curiosity about the world and how we cover it A good digital sense, with a knack for different types of storytelling Diplomacy and the ability to roll with change, as well as to give and receive constructive feedback The ability to work effectively across desks and at the necessary pace to meet deadlines for multiple platforms The ability to prioritize with strong attention to accuracy and juggle multiple coverage priorities across a diverse set of regions A strong collegial and collaborative attitude Professional judgment with respect to confidentiality Meticulous organizational and communication skills A deft touch with copy, including display type Being knowledgeable about Times style and applying it across different content types Familiarity with a broad cross-section of the Times newsroom A desire to learn new tools and journalism forms — and an interest in shaping them for the future The annual base pay range for this role is between $160,000 and $175,000.
