The mission of The New York Times is to seek the truth and help people understand the world. That means independent journalism is at the heart of all we do as a company. It’s why we have a world-renowned newsroom that sends journalists to report on the ground from nearly 160 countries. It’s why we focus deeply on how our readers will experience our journalism, from print to audio to a world-class digital and app destination. And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for. Job Description The New York Times Opinion desk is looking for an art director to join our award-winning design team. You will be responsible for an array of projects. You will partner with editorial and visual teams to create memorable presentations for print and digital endeavors, overseeing art direction and impactful online presentations. We are looking for someone who is a pragmatic innovator whose solutions elicit responses that justify the effort and investment. You will be responsible for art commissions, building and maintaining a roster of inclusive diverse talent, and, in partnership with the Design Director, developing a distinct in-house illustrative style for Opinion. You will also collaborate with colleagues of different backgrounds and widely-ranging technical levels. Please submit a portfolio demonstrating strong design work, a solid understanding of layout, typography and storytelling techniques. But just as important, we’re looking for someone who is experienced working with collaborators when they reach the limits of their expertise. Basic Requirements: 5 years of digital design experience Experience with visual and interactive design — a clear grasp of typography, layout, color, motion and behavior Familiarity with Figma or Adobe Sketch and Adobe Indesign Track record assigning and commissioning illustrations for digital projects An interest in narrative and visual storytelling, in journalism, and in the publishing industry at large Preferred Requirements: Demonstrated experience envisioning and directing the creation of presentations that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text Extreme attention to detail and excellent written and oral communication skills Positive attitude taking on all parts of a project, from production to delivery Ability to meet deadlines and to adapt to a sometimes unpredictable production environment Familiarity with competitors and also the new challenges and opportunities created by the changing media landscape Open to working a flexible schedule that may occasionally include nights or weekends The annual base pay range for this role is between $120,126.82 and $141,000.00. The New York Times is committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce, one that reflects the varied global community we serve. Our journalism and the products we build in the service of that journalism greatly benefit from a range of perspectives, which can only come from diversity of all types, across our ranks, at all levels of the organization. Achieving true diversity and inclusion is the right thing to do. It is also the smart thing for our business. So we strongly encourage women, veterans, people with disabilities, people of color and gender nonconforming candidates to apply.
