Description

Makes precision components from various materials. These components include but are not limited to; tooling, inspection gages, machine parts, jigs, and fixtures, which are to be used in any and all types of manufacturing equipment and processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Sets up and operates manual saws (circular and band).
  • Sets up and operates manual lathes.
  • Sets up and operates manual milling machines.
  • Heat treats various materials.
  • Possesses knowledge of tool steel grades and their best uses.
  • Utilizes CNC, PLC, automatic, and manual machinery to perform various precision machining operations.
  • Utilizes various types of inspection gages and measuring equipment including but not limited to; rulers, calipers, pin gages, ring gages, custom gages, micrometers, depth micrometers, indicators, surface plates, bore gages, telescope gages, small hole gages, toolmaker’s microscopes, optical comparators, form tracers and profilometers.
  • Personally owns, maintains, and utilizes the following measuring equipment and tools at minimum; 0-3” micrometers, 0-6” depth micrometers, 0-6” steel ruler, telescope gauges, small hole gauges, dial indicator, stand/base for said dial indicator, edge finder, metric and SAE combination wrenches, and a toolbox to house said measuring equipment and tools.
  • Reads and understands industry standard drawings to include geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Designs work holding jigs and fixtures.
  • Helps to ensure that all equipment, workstations, and sections related to their trade specialty are safe, well maintained, organized, efficient, and stocked with necessary items.
  • Performs proper handling and labeling of hazardous and nonhazardous materials and wastes as directed by supervisor.
  • Coordinates and collaborates with others to ensure smooth and efficient design, continuous improvement, and execution of processes.
  • Participates in continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Participates in learning and teaching with colleagues across the business, including but not limited to apprentices and toolmakers.
  • Reports immediately all suspicious and hazardous conditions to a supervisor.
  • Understands and observes all safety guidelines and assures quality and safety by complying with all appropriate CB policies and procedures.
  • Assists in maintaining clean, orderly and hazard-free work areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.

TRADE SPECIALTY ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Works in at least one of the following trade specialties

  •  a. Carbide Specialty
  • i. Specializes in operations necessary to make carbide components:
  1. Brazing, shrink fitting, linear surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, and electrical discharge machining (Sinker EDM, Wire EDM, EDM drill)
  2. Burning, grinding, filing, honing, lapping, and polishing complex forms in/on carbide dies and punches
  3. Possesses and applies knowledge of carbide grades and their best uses.
  • b. Grinding specialty
  • i. Specializes in all aspects of grinding:
  1.  Linear surface grinding, cylindrical surface grinding (I.D.s, O.D.s, shoulders, blind holes, tapers, etc.), jig grinding, form grinding, visual grinding, lapping, slip fitting and press fitting assemblies.
  2. Possesses and applies knowledge of grinding wheel types and their best uses.
  • c. CNC specialty
  • i. Specializes in CNC equipment:
  1. Writing, editing, and running programs (G code, conversational, and CAM)
  2. CNC milling and lathe work.
  3. CNC grinding
  4.  Electrical discharge machining (CNC Wire EDM, EDM drill) is preferred.

Qualifications


 To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate the following competencies:

  • Minimum 10 years of related experience preferred (time served in a related apprenticeship can count towards this total).
  • Without guidance, must regularly and consistently demonstrate the ability to perform all “Essential Duties and Responsibilities” safely, effectively, and accurately, without causing damage, or excessive wear to equipment, shop, or tools.
  • Without guidance, must regularly and consistently demonstrate the ability to perform all “Trade Specialty Essential Duties and Responsibilities”, of at least one trade specialty (Carbide, Grinding, or CNC), safely, effectively and accurately, without causing damage, or excessive wear to equipment, shop, or tools.
  • Must consistently be a top producer, while maintaining the highest quality of workmanship.
  • Must be able to make components that meet the requirements of a given industry standard drawing, or sketch.
  • Must be able to apply concepts of shop math, including but not limited to algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Must be able to basically operate common computers. Including but not limited to Microsoft operating systems, and software applications, as well as keyboards mouses and touch screens.
  • Ability to write, read and comprehend the English language.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • 2 years of related vocational training preferred.
  • State Toolmaker certification or equivalent preferred.
  • Training and experience utilizing 5S/6S principles is a preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Guides, trains, and mentors' apprentices

  • Requires continuous long reaches, bending, standing, while handling light materials.
  • Sometimes requires using large wrenches, crowbars, lifting or moving heavy materials or parts.
  • Requires pushing, pulling, lifting or moving of materials and components that weigh up to 50lbs, with proper lifting techniques, and reasonable ergonomics.
  • Ability to lift 100lbs. with assistance.
  • Specific required vision abilities:
  • Must be able to see and interpret computer screens.
  • Must be able to read instructions, drawings, sketches, and gages.
  • Must be able to see surface finishes, as required by drawings and sketches, with or without the use of corrective lenses, and or vision aids.
  •  Color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are all required to safely navigate the shop, workstation, and equipment.
  • Requires fine motor skills to effectively manipulate hand tools and equipment.

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

  • Safety glasses and safety shoes are required while in the shop.
  • Hearing protection is required depending on noise levels.
  • Chemical, heat, and or cut resistant gloves are required as necessary.
  • Other personal protective equipment may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts such as power-driven equipment.
  • Occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, grease and dirt.
  • Exposed to moderate noise, hearing protection may be required at times.
