JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Seasonal Land Steward

Description:

The mission of the Cleveland Museum of Natural History’s Natural Areas Division is to identify and protect the best remnants of native habitats present in the Lake Erie and Upper Ohio River drainage prior to settlement. The Museum conducts robust stewardship and land management activities at its preserves, in an effort to maintain the habitat integrity at all of the sites, and to ensure the health and sustainability of rare plant and animal populations at the preserves.
As a Seasonal Land Steward, you will be working as an employee of Hunter International, the Museum’s stewardship partner, but you will be under the direction and supervision of the Museum on a day-to-day basis. You will be part of a unique approach to stewardship and biodiversity management, working on the Museum’s 12,400 acres of protected habitat in Northeast Ohio, assisting the Manager of Land Stewardship and Assistant Land Stewards in a wide variety of responsibilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation):
  • Assist with invasive plant management and eradication using a variety of tools.
  • Assist in the management of native plant communities.
  • Assist with the mapping of invasive plant populations and rare plant species and communities.
  • Perform data collection and data entry.
  • Analyze GPS and aerial drone mapping surveys and incorporate into GIS maps to prioritize treatment of invasive plant populations.
  • Assist in plant identification using taxonomic field guides.
  • Assist with on-site coordination of contractors and local partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma OR GED and 6 months of related experience.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner (e.g., hand tools, backpack sprayers).
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation to work.
Desired Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree or current undergrad pursuing a degree from a four-year college or university with a concentration in Biology, Botany, Restoration Ecology, or a closely related Natural Resources related field.
  • Experience or familiarity with taxonomic keys and/or field identification guides for plants and animals.
  • Experience with identifying and utilizing different techniques to remove non-native invasive plants.
  • Experience with working in the field.
Other Qualifications:
  • Intellectual curiosity and a passion for science, nature, and conservation.
  • Familiarity with the local, native flora and fauna of Northeast Ohio.
  • Desire to learn a variety of invasive species management techniques.
  • Ability to be an outstanding ambassador for the Museum.
  • Strong Decision-making Skills.
  • Ability to work with an interdisciplinary professional team, including high-level division and department directors.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be able to provide your own transportation to work sites across NE Ohio.
  • Must be able to work in sometimes difficult conditions, including inclement weather (hot and cold) and exposure to biting or stinging insects and uncomfortable (poisonous or prickly) plants; must be able to navigate physically challenging terrain and perform strenuous, labor-intensive field work. Most work sites lack immediate restroom access.

Work Schedule:
Typically Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm, with occasional evenings and weekends as agreed upon in advance. Work schedule is partially weather-dependent and will be 30-40 hours per week.
Pay rate: $17.00/hr
