As a Medical Technologist, you will perform and interpret tests while understanding the theory and scientific principles of laboratory testing. You will correlate abnormal laboratory data with pathological states, decide the validity of test results, and if additional tests are needed through the monitoring and verifying quality controls.
Your primary duties will include but are not limited to:

Following lab procedures for specimen handling, processing, and analysis while reporting and maintaining patient results.

• Performing maintenance and cleaning on instruments and equipment. 

• Documenting all corrective actions taken when tests deviate from performance specifications. 

Identifying and reporting any problems that may affect test performance and results. 

Recommending solutions and improvements in the laboratory.

The Ideal future caregiver is someone who: 

• Shows strong critical thinking skills and is self-motivated. 

• Can work under minimal supervision and shows decisive judgement. 

• Works well in a fast-paced, stressful environment. 

• Can multitask with strong detail-orientation skills. 

• With a qualifying Bachelor’s degreein chemical, physical or biological science, has prior molecular laboratory experience or microbiology laboratory experience. 

Experience in this department includes more frequent exposure to abnormal results and cases than might be seen at other institutions. You will be working closely with a diverse team of caregivers to gain knowledge and experience. By setting personal goals that align with the lab’s business goals, you will be setting the groundwork for progression into a Lead Tech, Lab Coordinator, Quality Specialist or Supervisor role.

This role is on evening shift 2pm-10:30pm and includes working every 3rd weekend (Saturday and Sunday) 6pm-6am. You will also work 2 holidays per year.

Cleveland Clinic is offering a $5,000 sign on bonus (external new hires).

Diploma and transcripts must be provided prior to interviewing. Education will be verified. Education completed outside of the USA requires diploma & transcripts translated into English and proof of foreign equivalency from World Education Services (WES.org).

We will hire our clinical laboratory testing personnel in 3 different job titles based on educational background:

  • Medical Technologist (MT/MLS)
  • Med Lab Technician (MLT)
  • Lab Technician IV

Job Responsibilities:

  • Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  • Performs laboratory testing in a compliant manner.
  • Maintains regulatory knowledge and awareness as it pertains to specific job duties.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  • Assumes responsibility for and takes action regarding any quality control or quality assurance issues as it pertains to specific job duties.
  • Maintains instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
  • Assumes responsibility for good documentation practices and maintains clear and legible records.
  • Performs proficiency testing in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations i.e. analyze proficiency survey sample in the same manner as a patient specimens, no communication with other CLIA laboratories, complete record retention and accurate documentation and result reporting.
  • Assumes responsibility for participation in continuing education, professional development and required annual competency assessment.
  • Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant, or Laboratory Director.
  • Exercises good judgment, analytical and problem solving/troubleshooting skills.
  • Recommends solutions and improvements.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
  • May function in an educator and provides instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and the application of laboratory test protocols to students, employees, residents, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Competencies (Complexity of Work):

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work unsupervised or with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical demands include: Visual acuity to study specimens under a microscope.
  • Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation and tones.
  • Fine motor skills and manual dexterity to handle specimens and lab equipment required to process specimens and repair equipment.
  • May be required to stand for long periods of time.
  • Light lifting may be required.
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, biohazards, radioactive materials, etc.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Requirements per job title are as follows:

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST

Education: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from a four-year college or university.

OR

Meets the CLIA qualifications for high complexity testing personnel grandfathering clauses. See Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42, §493.1489(b)(3), §493.1489(b)(4), §493.1489(b)(5), §493.1491 Standards; High Complexity Testing Personnel Qualifications.

Work Experience: None Required

MED LAB TECHNICIAN (MLT)

Education: Associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.

OR

Have education and training equivalent to associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution per CLIA qualifications for high complexity testing personnel. See Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42, §493.1489(b)(2)(ii) Standard; High Complexity Testing Personnel Qualifications.

Work Experience: None Required

LAB TECHNICIAN IV

Education: Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological science from a four-year college or university is required.

OR

Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university AND have education and training equivalent to high complexity testing personnel per CLIA. See Code of Federal Regulations, Title 42 §493.1489(b)(2)(ii) Standard; High Complexity Testing Personnel Qualifications.
