Clayton County Public Schools is Hiring a Sergeant (Sector Commander) Near Jonesboro, GA

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Lieutenant, plans, directs, supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of School Resource Officers involved in traffic and field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations, and related services and activities; serves as Sector Commander on an assigned shift; oversees and participates in all work activities; assumes responsibility for assigned special programs, projects, or department-wide functions or activities; coordinates activities with other agencies; and performs a variety of administrative and technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. This position reports to the Lieutenant.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serve as first level supervisor/Sector Commander for an assigned shift; prepare and administer briefings; supervise and direct SROs and CSOs on assigned shift; conduct personnel, equipment, and building inspections; prepare, process, and maintain a variety of written reports and records pertaining to assigned activities including daily activity reports; incident reports and overtime submission to the departmental bookkeeper; review incident reports, required forms, summons, records, and related documents prepared by subordinates to ensure accuracy and timely completion; correct or instruct officers to make corrections; coordinate police activities with other units in the department, and/or other City departments or divisions; coordinate functions of the unit with other law enforcement agencies.

Conduct a continuing review of assigned activities to identify problems and develop recommendations for improving services; recommend and assist in the implementation of goals and objectives; establish schedules and methods for providing effective law enforcement services; implement approved policies and procedures; interpret, convey, and ensure implementation of agency policies, procedures, and methods; ensure that personnel have clear guidelines of authority and responsibility; participate in the selection and hiring of assigned personnel; train and evaluate assigned personnel; assist with training and orientation of new employees; provide training, guidance, and counseling to assigned personnel; complete employee performance evaluations and reviews as required; promote career development of subordinates.

Respond to major crimes, accident scenes, and emergencies; assume initial command; establish field command posts and implement the Incident Command System; may act as incident commander until such time as a higher-ranking person assumes command. Provide a full range of administrative support to the Command Staff; conduct a variety of organizational studies, investigations, and operational studies; recommend modifications to programs, policies, and procedures as appropriate; prepare departmental policies and procedures; prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence; participate in budget development and administration; prepare and plan budget requests for assigned operations and special details; participate in the development of grant applications and the administration of grants.

When assigned Sector Commander, supervise and personally conduct complete and detailed incident reports of a general and/or specialized nature; review all SRO generated reports and evaluate and prioritize them for transfer to the detectives for follow-up investigations; manage day-to-day activities and coordinate SRO daily assignments and programs involving multiple officers, units and sectors; oversee and participate in after hour athletic and other school sponsored events; review all incident reports and make recommendations and suggestions to officers for improvement purposes; supervise and assist officers in the gathering of evidence, questioning of witnesses, and apprehension of suspects.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice, Business/Public Administration or related field required. Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred.

10 years continuous service as a sworn member of a Police Department required; or any equivalent combination of training, and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Supervisory experience helpful.

First line supervision of subordinates and act as a mid-level manager in the absence a Lieutenant.

Must be at least 21 years of age. Georgia P.O.S.T. Certified, and qualified to carry a firearm. Peace Officer’s Certification in good standing. Must possess a valid Georgia Driver's License.

Requires the ability to learn and understand subject matter principles and techniques; to make independent judgments in absence of supervision; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

Requires the ability to read a variety of professional, technical and administrative documentation, directions, instructions, methods and procedures related to police work and law enforcement. Requires the ability to write reports and essays with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech. Requires the ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.

Is able to administer policies, procedures, plans and activities and to monitor performance of subordinates against measured established goals. Knows how to administer operations and staff plans and objectives for the expedience and effectiveness of specific duties. Is able to implement long-term goals for the department in order to promote effectiveness and efficiency. Has considerable knowledge of all applicable laws, ordinances, policies, standards and regulations pertaining to the specific duties and responsibilities of the job. Knows how to keep abreast of any changes in policy, methods, operations, equipment needs, etc. as they pertain to departmental operations and local law enforcement activities. Is able to effectively communicate and interact with subordinates, elected officials, management, employees, members of the general public and all other groups involved in the activities as they relate to the department. Is able to assemble information and make written reports and documents in a concise, clear and effective manner. Have good organizational, management, human relations, and technical skills.

Is able to use independent judgment and discretion in managing subordinates including the handling of emergency situations, determining and deciding upon procedures to be implemented, setting priorities, maintaining standards, and resolving problems. Has the ability to comprehend, interpret, and apply regulations, procedures, and related information.

Operates a law enforcement vehicle, during day and/or night hours; inspects maintenance of vehicle prior to using and requests service and/or repairs as needed; operates and utilizes various radio devices for communications. Utilizes and maintains weapons and equipment, including gun(s), nightstick, handcuffs, flashlight, etc., in functional and presentable conditions; performs firearm requirements at prescribed departmental levels. Operates a computer, printer, etc., to enter, store and retrieve data to prepare and produce reports, compose routine correspondence and disseminate information to others on the system; uses knowledge of various software programs in an effective and efficient manner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of job related machines and equipment. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry related objects or materials. Must be able to exert up to one hundred pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to fifty pounds force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of fifty to one hundred pounds.

NOTE: This is a grade 26, 225-day position that pays for experience up to a Step 8.
