WORK ENVIRONMENT Maintenance Helpers provide a variety of services in support of Facility Services. These services include, but are not limited to, manual labor, landscaping/grounds maintenance, floor maintenance/care, interior and exterior painting, snow and ice mitigation and snow on call, hospice bed pickup and delivery, etc.in support of the Facility Services Department. This position uses both hand or power tools and equipment. Includes the safe operation of hospital owned vehicles and proficient use of a manual transmission. Workers typically perform a variety of tasks based on the work tasks assigned or identified areas of focus:

• Landscape: mowing, trimming, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking, leaf and debris cleanup, irrigation of lawns and ornamentals, and other related tasks.
• Ground keeping,
• Floor Care: waxing, shampooing, buffing, vacuuming, and other related tasks.
• Interior and exterior painting and surface care: painting, staining, varnishing, rolling, spaying, taping and other related tasks.
• Support role activities such as biohazard waste disposal, on call snow management, bed delivery/pickup and other related tasks.

• Maintenance Helpers are required to participate on the seasonal on call rotation for snow mitigation in order to maintain a safe facility.
• On call, seasonal snow mitigation involves the use of snowplows, snow blowers, snow shovels, and ice melt spreaders.

 QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school diploma or general education degree (GED); experience in grounds keeping activates preferred, floor maintenance experience preferred. Experience in the safe operation of manual transmission vehicles is essential. Willingness and ability to learn and become proficient in areas of little or no experience as it relates to the Maintenance Helper role.Job Duties and Tasks – These are the major duties and tasks of this position. Individuals will be asked to have a basic understanding of the following duties and tasks but may be focused on two or more of the major areas of care. The tasks for this position may include any of the following:

1. Care for the grounds by developing and maintaining an appropriate grounds cycle of care that provides mowing, weeding, and string trimming and edging around flowerbeds, walks, and buildings.
2. Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass shrubs, and trees, using hand or automatic spraying or spreading.
3. Maintain irrigation systems, including winterizing the system and spring startup.
4. Implement irrigation practices that mitigate water waste such as the watering of buildings, vehicles, walkway or asphalt parking areas.
5. Support the Custodian / Floor Tech Aide in biohazardous waste processing and floor care projects.
6. Maintain safe walkways, entrances, and parking areas.

These areas of work may require work to be performed in cramped spaces, involve frequent lifting, standing, kneeling, walking on uneven surfaces, overhead reaching, and climbing i.e. ladders, attic / roof hatch egress, and scaffolding.  Work is both indoors and outdoors, which may be subject to variable weather conditions. Work may be performed during days, evening, nights, and weekends when needed to maintain the safe 24/7 operations of a Critical Access Hospital.
