Job Description:
The Product Manager is responsible for the development and success of a company's products. They are responsible for defining the product strategy, developing product specifications, and working with cross-functional teams to bring the product to market. The Product Manager must possess strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills, and be able to work effectively in a fast-paced and constantly evolving environment.
Though Product Managers interact often with engineers and developers through sprint reviews and detailed feedback, they do not direct the day to day operations of those teams. Product Managers thread the needle on ensuring goals and timelines are met (normally through sprints/epics and go to market schedules) and not provide the developer tasking or engineering detailed plans. When executed correctly there is a symbiotic relationship but when roles are not clear or followed then the entire team faces chaos and confusion.
Key Attributes:
  • Product Vision: The Product Manager must have a clear understanding of the company's overall goals/strategy & be able to develop a product vision that aligns with the business goals and vision. They must be able to articulate the product vision to the rest of the organization, including executives, engineers, designers, and other stakeholders. Collaboration with cross team leadership is critical.
  • Market Knowledge: The Product Manager must have a deep understanding of the market in which the product will be sold. They must be able to conduct market research, analyze customer needs and preferences, and identify opportunities for the product to succeed in the market. Equally important is understanding the competitive landscape which allows for the Product differentiation and a pricing approach that meets what the market will bear in the competitive landscape.
  • Technical Knowledge: The Product Manager must have a strong technical background and be able to work closely with engineering teams to develop the product. They must be able to translate technical specifications into business requirements, and vice versa.
  • Analytical Skills: The Product Manager must have strong analytical skills and be able to use data and metrics to make informed decisions about the product. They must be able to analyze market trends, customer feedback, and sales data to adjust the product strategy.
  • Communication Skills: The Product Manager must have excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively with cross-functional teams. They must be able to communicate the product vision and strategy to engineers, designers, marketers, and other stakeholders, and be able to receive feedback and incorporate it into the product strategy.
Key Tasks:
  • Define Product Strategy: The Product Manager in direct coordination with engineering & operations/sales shares the responsibility for defining the product strategy as it aligns with the business directives, including market positioning, pricing, and feature set. They must be able to prioritize features based on customer needs, technical feasibility, and business goals. Collaboration is most critical in this phase.
  • Develop Product Specifications: The Product Manager must work closely with engineers and designers to develop detailed product specifications. They must be able to translate customer needs into technical requirements, and work with engineers to ensure that the product is developed according to specifications. Here the deep reservoir of user personas developed as well as strong touch points with sales shapes the answer to the customer needs.
  • Launch the Product: The Product Manager is responsible for launching the product, including creating a go-to-market strategy, developing marketing materials, and coordinating with sales teams to ensure that the product is successful in the market.
  • Monitor Product Performance: The Product Manager must monitor the performance of the product, including sales data, customer feedback, and market trends. They must be able to adjust the product strategy based on this data and communicate these adjustments to the rest of the organization.
  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Teams: The Product Manager must work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, proposals, marketing, and sales teams. They must be able to communicate the product vision and strategy to these teams and collaborate with them to ensure that the product is successful.
