Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION
:
Perform a variety of manual and skilled-work related to the maintenance of College grounds. Perform general grounds keeping functions, including mowing, trimming, weed control, irrigation, and the operation and maintenance of grounds equipment. Make routine repairs and adjustments to equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
:
Maintain campus grounds appearance through mowing, trimming, pruning, planting, grading, staking, mulching, designing, calculating and applying fertilizer and chemicals, soil amendments, etc. Operate trucks and mowers and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on equipment, such as: power mowers, weed trimmers, edging tools, chain saws, power washers, and other grounds keeping and repair tools.
Install and maintain irrigation systems, including programming controllers, setting and changing sprinklers. Adhere to water use restrictions as necessary.
Inspect campus for safety hazards. Correct and/or report unsafe conditions to appropriate personnel.
Make recommendations regarding deferred maintenance and major tree surgery.
Maintain records SDS information, completed projects and department expenditures and inventory of material and supplies.
Provide litter patrol of grounds and parking lots.
Design pest control programs in accordance with principles of integrated pest management.
Participate in the Campus Grounds committee and department planning process.
Maintain cooperative working relationship with College staff, other organizations, and the public.
Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas including "Integrated Pest Management" rules and policies.
Coordinate with other public agencies and members of the public when required for special projects.
May consult with and make recommendations to administration regarding existing systems and future building projects. Oversee work of contractors.
Provide assistance to other department personnel as workload and staffing levels dictate.
This job is essential to the operation of the College during emergency or other critical situations as identified by administration. As such, the College has designated this position as Essential Personnel.
GENERAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the classification.
  • Participate in college committees when requested.
  • Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility, which may require travel.
  • Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Maintain student confidentiality, data integrity, and comply with all related college, state, and federal standards, including the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
:
High school education supplemented by additional training equal to two years of college and three years of experience. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as described.
Thorough knowledge of ornamental horticulture, pest identification and pesticide application, irrigation system design, maintenance and operation, and general grounds keeping principles and techniques.
Ability to exemplify traits that reflect the College's culture, including integrity, a customer service orientation, cultural competency, trustworthiness, flexibility and a willingness to change.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS OR LICENSES
:
Driver's license valid in the State of Oregon, public pesticide applicators license and irrigation audit certifications.

WORKING CONDITIONS
:
The position requires regular (60-80%) ability to use dexterity and fine motor skills assemble, build or repair machines or other objects.
The position requires continuous (80 %) physical effort such as lifting, carrying, or movement, etc. Movements required to complete work require continuous speed, agility, hand eye coordination and equipment operation.
The work environment has constant hazards or obstacles (80 %). There may be a high personal risk or hazard. Job conditions are constantly uncomfortable, with consistent (80 %) issues of confinement, temperature change, incident of noise, or interactions of a disagreeable nature, inside/outside work, dirty conditions, exposure to contagious disease, etc. Position may require regular responsibility for driving.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
:
Supervision of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. May provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel, and may assign work to student workers.

:
Works under the general supervision of the Director, Campus Services.
