Description

Civic Works strengthens Baltimores communities through education, skills development, and community service and hosts Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps (BCLC), a five-week summer program that provides Baltimore City high school students the opportunity to develop job skills, remain physically active, and learn more about the environment through a variety of conservation projects. BCLC members work throughout the city doing trail maintenance on hiking trails in city parks, turning vacant lots into green spaces, and learning about farming at Real Food Farm.

Position Summary:

Alongside the Civic Works Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps Program Manager, Crew Leaders will lead, educate, and inspire high school students enrolled in Baltimore Conservation Leadership Corps (BCLC). Crew leaders will lead a group of 7 students on projects. Past locations have included: Clifton Park, Herring Run Park, Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park, Civic Works Real Food Farm and community gardens throughout Baltimore City.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Supervise crew members, facilitate worksite projects, and manage crew workers schedule
  • Train and supervise crew members in the safe and proper use of tools and in all aspects of the daily service project (may include wildlife habitat work, maintenance, site restoration, farm work etc.)
  • Assist with tool and equipment logistics and maintenance
  • Plan for and carry out Environmental Education lessons.
  • Manage administrative aspects of the crew including, but not limited to, required pre- and post-program paperwork, daily medical and work logs, and equipment inventories.
  • Maintain relationships with agency partners including managing all logistical and operational work and how it relates to the partner, project, and coordinate interactions/training with the crew.
  • Provide an emotionally and physically safe environment for crew
  • Communicate with full time Civic Works eld staff as required and as needed
  • Maintain the safety of participants by following CDC guidelines in response to COVID-19

Desired Skills and Education:

  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Drivers License 
  • Familiarity with Baltimore City
  • Must be and remain drug free throughout employment
  • Experience working with, and among, diverse youth (ages 14-18) Teaching in an educational environment a plus
  • Must be able to attend Crew Leader training
  • Experience with conservation work skills or related skills, preferred.
    • i.e. trail maintenance, trail construction, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, farming, and gardening
  • Ability to perform manual/physical labor for up to 8 hours per day while working outdoors, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and organized
