City of Yucaipa is Hiring a Recreation Leader - S.T.A.R.S. - Calimesa Elementary School Near Yucaipa, CA

Under the direction of the S.T.A.R.S. Site Supervisor, the S.T.A.R.S. Recreation Leader works directly with students in the City’s S.T.A.R.S. After School Program on local school campuses. This position at Calimesa Elementary School will assist in the planning and implementation of student activities, include a willingness to learn and implement Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) strategies, and have a passion for working with students in Transitional Kindergarten through fifth grades. The work schedule is typically a 4-hour shift, between 10:45AM – 6:15PM (varies on program needs), Monday through Friday, during the academic year. The position may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and academic breaks for trainings and other duties as assigned.$16.00 per hour, maximum of 950 hours per fiscal year.

The typical duties of this position include:

  • Lead, engage, and supervise up to 20 students in a group setting with academic enrichment activities, homework assistance, and physical activities, using materials provided by the program (a 1:10 ratio is preferred, but is no greater than 1:20);
  • Administer snack to students in an organized method;
  • Ability to use “attention-getters” and maintain students' attention before, during, and following activities;
  • Serve as a role model and leader to students;
  • Create an engaging, safe, and positive learning environment for students guided by Site Supervisors;
  • Support challenging situations in an appropriate, effective, and efficient manner;
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and orderly site while following all State and County safety guidelines pertaining to COVID-19, including, but not limited to wiping tables and chairs, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and taking out trash daily;
  • Monitor and maintain all supplies and equipment;
  • Assist in record-keeping and basic clerical functions for the daily administration of the program;
  • Provide exceptional customer service to students, families, school personnel, and the general public.
Performance of assigned duties and responsibilities may include prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, pushing, pulling, carrying, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 25 pounds or more.
  • High School diploma or equivalent; College level training is desirable and incumbent employees are expected to avail themselves of specialized adult school, and/or college courses in this field as prescribed by YCJUSD/City policy, and staff development as provided by the City
  • Possess or obtain a First Aid/CPR/AED certification within 6 months of employment;
  • Prior paid job-related experience successfully working with students in a learning situation;
  • Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities:
    • Skills and methods used in controlling and motivating students, psychology in the care and handling of students, basic arithmetic calculations, operation of standard office equipment, use of English grammar, punctuation and spelling;
    • Knowledge of child development, instructional processes;
    • Abilities to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, learn simple methods and procedures to be followed in an instructional situation, maintain confidentiality of student records, meet schedules and deadlines, read, and write English, rapidly learn methods and materials used in a variety of instructional situations; sit for extended periods of time;
    • Significant physical abilities include reaching/handling, talking/hearing, near and far visual acuity.
  • Testing Required: TB test clearance, criminal justice fingerprint clearance, and drug test clearance
