Location : Winston-Salem, NC Job Type: Full-Time / Permanent Job Number: 07029 Department: Recreation & Parks Opening Date: 05/01/2024 Closing Date: 6/16/2024 11:59 PM Eastern Description History This Ellis Maples design was built in 1953 as a nine hole golf course to serve African American golfers during segregation. The course was expanded in 1956 to 18 holes, becoming a destination for golfers in the Triad area. In 2010 Winston Lake Golf Course was added to the National Black Golf Hall of Fame and in 2023 to the National Register of Historic Places Job Summary Oversees general operations at a public golf course, driving range and pro shop. Work is performed under general supervision performing difficult professional, managerial, and administrative tasks. Operational hours are 7 days a week and require evenings, weekends and holidays. Manages golf shop, monitors course play, promotes the golf course facilities and provides leadership to ensure rules and regulations are met in an outstanding customer service delivery. Examples of Duties Essential Tasks
Planning and supervision of golf course, carts and club house
Supervises the daily operation of the pro shop
Manages revenue for the golf course including basic accounting and management of point of sales system
Oversees pro shop budget and golf shop merchandise, equipment supply sales and orders
Prepares financial records and reports
Takes reservations in person and by telephone
Records and manages data on golf rounds
Answers questions about reservations, facility policies, procedures and programs
Enforces rules of conduct for employees and rules and regulations for the public;
Provides outstanding customer service to golfers and community members
Teaches golf lessons, plans/conducts golf clinics and youth programming
Plays and teaches golf to a high level
Organizes and schedules golf tournaments
Work with the on site First Tee of the Carolinas to support and grow the youth game
Promotes and markets the golf course / programming calendar
Ensures the maintenance of golf carts and related equipment
Maintains orderly and clean facility
Oversees equipment repairs and reports to leadership
Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
Ensures communication with citizens regarding on course work, routine maintenance schedules, repairs.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Hires, assigns, directs and inspects the work of staff
Provides training and onboarding of staff
Creates work plans and evaluates performance of staff
Rewards and provides disciplinary measures as needed
Provides a positive and goal oriented work environment
Manages any independent contractors
Typical Qualifications Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited college with course work related to golf management or related field or equivalent amount of experience
Must be PGA Class A Certified and have an active PGA membership
Must have a valid North Carolina Driver's license
Minimum of 3 years of golf course management experience
Must have comprehensive knowledge of the rules, etiquette and game of golf,; thorough knowledge of the practices, methods and policies used in municipal golf course operations
Strong communication skills both verbally and written
Strong computer skills including use of word documents, spreadsheets and point of sales systems
Supplemental Information Physical Requirements
Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and some occasional work with heavy weight materials.
Required to stand, walk and use hands to finger, grasp or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach with their hands and arms.
Vision is required for depth perception and for creating and analyzing written or computer data. Vocal communication is required to convey detailed or important information quickly and loudly. Work is both indoor in an office setting and outdoor on the golf course in a variety of weather conditions. The Golf Professional will be exposed to chemicals and fertilizers associated with grounds work, trash, garbage, paint, paint thinner, and cleaning products. Work is subject to final standards of OSHA on bloodborne pathogens.
