POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION
The Summer Camp Leader assists with the design, development, and implementation of an exciting, safe, and fun-filled experience for participants in the Youth and Teen program. This position requires a minimum of 460 hours of documented work or volunteer experience with school-age children, ages 5 to 14. This position works at one of the City's two campsites: City Park or Countryside. Camp Leaders are scheduled to work between 38 and 40 hours per week between the hours of 6:30 a.m. and 6:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Staff cannot take more than five days of time off during Camp.
Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules.

The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate.

Mandatory staff training (Tuesday, May 28, 2024 through Saturday, June 1, 2024) is designed to help develop staff in these and other areas.
JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS
Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks
  1. Assists in the planning and organizing of activities in the areas of crafts, sports, games, special events, and field trips with other camp leaders
  2. Provides a safe environment for the participants
  3. Complies with licensing regulations
  4. Administers basic first aid
  5. Helps to maintain equipment and supplies
  6. Maintains regular and punctual attendance
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Attends staff meetings
  2. Provides additional assistance to special needs children
  3. Drives a golf cart (City Park location only)
Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications
Required :
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or GED
  • At least three (3) months of documented, full-time equivalent (460 hours) work or volunteer experience with school-age children, five to 15 years of age
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification (provided during training when necessary)
Preferred :
  • Completion of some related college coursework
  • Current and valid driver's license, safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment (City Park location only)
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered.
Physical Requirements
This position requires a moderate degree of physical stamina and strength, including the ability to:
  • Frequently sit, stand and walk through a multi-level facility
  • Occasionally squat, bend, kneel, twist, climb, balance and reach over head
  • Occasionally lift, carry, push or pull items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds
  • Frequently use hands and fingers for fine manipulation; occasionally use light and firm grasp
  • Frequently see objects up close to perform office tasks and far away to observe activity for safety hazards or problems
  • Constantly use hearing to interact with guests and staff and recognize trouble outside of view
  • Occasionally use sufficient physical strength, stamina and agility to perform emergency work in various capacities

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is constantly performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures. Work is performed in a high public use recreation facility where loud noise and multiple events and activities at one time may cause a distraction. Exposure to periods of high activity and stress under demanding conditions. The position requires a great deal of communication with City employees, the public, and outside agencies.

Golf cart (City Park site only), recreation and sports equipment, and cellular phones.
