City of Westerville, OH is Hiring an APPRENTICE TRAFFIC SIGNAL TECHNICIAN Near Westerville, OH

Description

This is an entry-level, apprentice Traffic Signal Technician and is designed to teach the basic skills and techniques necessary to become a Traffic Signal Technician. Work involves assisting Traffic Signal Technicians in troubleshooting signal equipment problems and applying both temporary and permanent solutions to all city traffic control equipment and other general maintenance, installation, and repairs needed to keep our systems fully operational.

SUPERVISION

All work will be performed under the direction of the Traffic Signal Supervisor or Technician assigned by the Signal Supervisor. Work is reviewed for accuracy and consistency with traffic control principles, department, and City policies.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK

Assists in installing traffic signals, pedestrian signals, school zone flasher assemblies, RRFB assemblies, blank-out signs, video or radar detection systems, emergency vehicle preemption systems, and other signal-related equipment. Assists in the maintenance of signal cabinets, cleaning, troubleshooting faulty components, responding to public service requests; operating bucket and digger derrick trucks, hydro-vac machines, skid loaders, and other equipment; operates hand and power tools.
Assist in creating temporary work zones in the roadway.
May perform groundwork, including preparing material for Signal Technicians and stocking trucks with necessary supplies and equipment.
Cleans and maintains trucks, warehouses, and equipment.
Completes required reports and documentation for material and equipment maintenance.
Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Active enrollment in high school
Possession of a valid Ohio Drivers License.
Knowledge of traffic signal operation
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the job
Basic understanding of electricity.
Ability to work precisely under extreme weather conditions.
Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.
Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
Ability to use various tools, including power and hand tools associated with the traffic signal industry.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Ability to communicate effectively with other employees and the public.
Ability to climb into, safely operate, and work from an aerial bucket truck in repairing traffic devices.
Ability to ensure compliance with related safety standards.
Ability to use voltage testers and meters.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city employees and the general public.

City pays portion of OPERS Retirement Contribution.
