Director of Public Works (DPW)
Salary Range: 90,000 -$100,000
FLSA: Exempt
Description:
The DPW Director supervises, administers, plans, organizing and directing the activities of the Public Works Department. Responsibilities include storm sewer system, road and sidewalk maintenance and repair; tree and refuse removal; public improvement projects; city properties including cemeteries; streetlights, city fuel system, city events and emergencies as required.
Additional responsibilities include but not limited to budget preparation and compliance reports. Also exercises supervision directly and indirectly over the foreman, mechanics. Laborers, clerical and related positions.
Essential Duties
· Plan and supervise the daily operations of the public works department.
· Conduct periodic inspections of public work facilities to determine maintenance needs. Set up daily work priorities and objectives Coordinate equipment use. Schedule and organize work crews engaged in such operations as street repair and maintenance traffic sign maintenance and storm sewer maintenance.
· Participate in the selection and training public works employees.
· Ensure there are sufficient staff certified or licensed to comply with state requirements.
· Investigate complaints regarding public works facilities and initiate corrective action as required.
· Personally supervise difficult work projects and inspect routine projects in process to assure conformance with city work standards and safety practices.
· Maintain records of equipment use and material expenditures. Supervise the purchase and storage of materials and tools. Coordinate the maintenance and repair of vehicles and mechanical equipment.
· Compiles the annual budget request for the public works department. Prepares specifications for major equipment purchases.
· Coordinate public works operations with those of other city departments and other public works agencies in the area.
· Serve on various boards and committees such as the Central Wayne County Sanitation Authority (CWCSA) Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA)
Requirements:
Education and Experience:
· Preferred bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Construction Management, OR closely related field, OR: work history equivalent to a bachelor’s degree with five or more years of related progressively responsible experience as Director or Assistant Director in a governmental public works department.
· A valid Michigan driver’s license as well as a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brakes and tank endorsement.
· Experience and knowledge of regulations and policies governing public works field operations and know public and employee safety practices to minimize injury and property damage at city work sites.
· Experience and knowledge of the procedures, practices, materials, and equipment utilized in the maintenance and repair of streets, and solid waste disposal to effectively plan and conduct city public works field operations.
· Displays strong interpersonal skills with department staff, city officials, and the public.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
· Knowledge of regulations and policies governing public works field operations including public and employee safety policies and practices.
· Knowledge of the procedures, practices, materials, and equipment utilized in the maintenance and repair of streets, and solid waste disposal to effectively plan and conduct city public works field operations.
· Excellent human relations/communication skills in dealing with department staff. City officials and the public.
· Other duties to meet business needs.
