The current SkillBridge opportunities include:

Human Resource Specialist

The Human Resources Specialist will work in the Staffing & Compensation division.

  • Assist in filling vacancies through screening applications, referral of applicants and provide advice on selection techniques.
  • Create advertisements in the applicant tracking system, preparing correspondence and memorandums to interpret policy and make recommendations, and analyzing data for compliance and consistency.
  • Research, compile and analyze data/metrics from various sources (i.e. Applicant Tracking system reports, vendor platform reports, HRIS- reports).
  • Assist with career fairs and source candidate using proactive techniques (creative job advertising, LinkedIn/Indeed Resume search and/or other sourcing platforms, networking etc.) to identify a diverse pipeline of talent.
  • Assist with training and creating presentations.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience with overseeing personnel related functions, demonstrate strong written, oral communication skills and relationship building skills.

IT Systems Engineer

Through this program, the City of Virginia Beach is seeking motivated Interns to work and learn in our Information Technology department located in Virginia Beach, VA. The successful candidate will participate in a practical, structured, systematic program of on-the-job training AND related instruction to develop existing military technical experience. Internship will be up to180 days and can only commence within 180 days before leaving active duty service.

Mechanic Technician

  • Perform Automotive Services Preventive maintenance checklist, such as oil changes, top off fluids, tire rotation, grease components, replace engine air filters, fuel filter, and adjust tire pressure.
  • Perform safety check and battery checks
  • Conduct vehicle inspections for leaks, worn, broken, damaged or missing parts.
  • Perform tire repairs/replacements
  • Assists in more complex repairs such as servicing heating and air conditioning systems
  • Operate shop equipment such as lifts, tire machines, and pneumatic/battery operated tools
  • Ability to use a computer, email, and fleet software to review and process work orders, parts requests, and annotate repairs as needed
  • Help repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and other mechanical/operational systems

Engineer (Stormwater)

  • Perform preliminary design work via field work, product research, specification writing and plan preparation.
  • Check work for conformance to City, State, and Federal standards
  • Review site plans
  • Research legal plat and deed information as necessary for projects; research public and private utility information for design projects and permits
  • Provide assistance with contract administration and inspection services as needed for CIP projects; and provide assistance in the contract administration and inspection services on an as needed basis for minor capital improvement program projects
  • Research existing utility and site plans and compile project information to accurately reflect existing conditions and utility locations.
  • Coordinate with inspectors and surveyors as needed for water and sanitary sewer infrastructure data collection.
  • Use personal computers, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, ArcGIS and similar programs to track, manage and report data. 
  • Provide support to the Regulatory Bureau including the Virginia Stormwater Management Program (VSMP).

Emergency Management Intern

The Emergency Management Intern will work closely with the Security Program Specialist and Emergency Management Program Manager roles. The position will assist in:

  • Supporting the implementation and management of city-wide emergency management and security programs.
  • Assisting in the development of citywide plans, policies, and processes in support of the emergency management and security program.
  • Liaising with contracted security firm managers and responding to security incidents under supervision.
  • Conducting facility risk assessments and coordinating with departments to implement security changes.
  • Developing and conducting workforce emergency management and security training and exercise programs.
  • Assisting with community outreach efforts and educational programs on emergency preparedness.
