CITY OF UPPER ARLINGTON is Hiring an UA Library Branch Associate (Evenings and Weekends/Lane Road) Near Branch, OH

Do you like working with patrons of all ages and helping them find what they need in the library? We are seeking a Branch Associate to work in all areas of the dynamic Lane Road Branch, to check items in and out, and work with patrons of all ages to help them select library materials. In addition, you'll be assisting patrons in using computers and their personal devices.

Job Summary:

Participates in the operation of a full-service library branch including serving patrons, maintaining collections, and assisting with special services and programming.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provides patron information about a variety of library and community services, resources, and information.
  2. Provides patron assistance with circulation of materials including checking in and checking out items and retrieving held items.
  3. Responds to general questions and specific questions relating to library accounts including collections.
  4. Monitors and provides guidance to patrons in the use of the library facilities, equipment, and services. Instructs patrons on the use of the computer-based library catalog and computer programs.
  5. Responds to basic questions on the availability and location of library materials. May place holds on patrons’ behalf. Contacts patrons regarding circulation and materials issues.
  6. Promotes and educates patrons on the use of online resources such as the library catalog and digital resources.
  7. Assists patrons using their personal devices using library materials.
  8. Responds to reference questions using all formats available and performs reader’s advisory.
  9. Assists in the development of reader’s advisory tools including booklists, bibliographies, and displays.
  10. Assists with collection maintenance including weeding and repairs.
  11. Assists in program planning, set-up, and delivery.
  12. Retrieves and processes items that have been requested to be held at current location or sent to other locations for pickup.
  13. Sorts, organizes, and shelves library materials.
  14. Shelf-reads assigned areas and re-shelves out of place items.
  15. Empties books drops and organizes materials.
  16. Maintains reserved items.
  17. Identifies materials in need of repair/replacement and takes appropriate action.
  18. Conducts items searched as assigned.
  19. Serves as staff in charge, as needed.
  20. Trains new staff members as assigned.
  21. May assume independent responsibility for assigned specialized work area.
  22. Oversees opening and closing procedures.
  23. May count money, reconcile with reports, and prepare deposits.
  24. Serves on library committees as assigned.
  25. Follows library safety and emergency procedures.
  26. Reports maintenance and safety issues to supervisor and/or Facilities personnel.
  27. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of library policies, practices, and procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of reader’s advisory and basic reference tools preferred.
  • Effective customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Competent in the use of Windows-based computer programs.
  • Ability to utilize reliable transportation to promptly report to job assignment and other locations, per job requirements.

 Education and Experience: 

  • High school diploma or GED required. Some college coursework or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two or more years work experience in a library or education environment preferred.

 Physical and Environmental Conditions: 

  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of libraries and offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
  • Considerable mobility including, but not limited to, extensive periods of walking, bending, sitting, lifting weights up to 20 pounds, and pushing full book carts.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform general typing and computer skills.
  • Calm and focused handling of interruptions and distractions.
  • Periodic intense concentration and sustained viewing of a computer monitor.
  • Position requires working irregular hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Occasional local travel by personal automobile may be required. 

HOURS/SCHEDULE:

Wednesdays 5:15-8:15 pm
Thursdays 5:15-8:15 pm 
Every other Saturday 9:15-1:15 pm
Every other Sunday 12:15-5:15 pm
