CITY OF TUPELO is Hiring a PUBLIC WORKS LABORER II-SANITATION Near Tupelo, MS

SUMMARY:

Operates in a skilled driving position working with collection of brush and large debris items and performs related manual tasks. Operates other heavy equipment on a temporary, trainee, or emergency basis. Performs manual labor of a semi-skilled level which may include the use of standard or specialized hand tools, power-operated equipment, and other equipment in the field of arbor culture as needed.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary Duty - Operates heavy equipment such as a shuttle truck that collects brush and large debris items off loaded from the Knuckle Boom trucks. This position requires skilled driving due to pick up locations being in tight confined areas, as well as in the presence of other vehicles and pedestrians. Performs manual tasks that may include the use of standard specialized hand tools and power-operated equipment. Chainsaw is most common.


Secondary Duties
- Operates other brush and large debris heavy equipment such as a knuckle-boom truck, dump truck, dozer, track hoe, and end loader on a temporary, trainee, or emergency basis.

  • Performs preventative maintenance and ensures equipment is operational, fuels equipment, washes, greases, conducts pre-trip/post-trip inspections, reports need for maintenance or repair of equipment to Supervisor.
  • Operates power equipment and tools essential to completing daily tasks. Chainsaws are most common. (A degree of skill and technique is required.)
  • Performs ground man duties while engaged in arbor care assignments.
  • Follows standard safety precautions in the operation of equipment.
  • Be able to follow written and oral instructions to follow a daily routing plan.
  • Ability to operate department vehicles and equipment without supervision.
  • May be required to work overtime or alternate hours as necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
  • The employee performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or acceptable equivalent (i.e. GED) is required. Previous experience in a related area is encouraged.


LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner to the general public/citizens.
  • Ability to write routine daily paperwork.


REASONING ABILITY:

  • The ability to apply basic logic or reason in routine and non-routine functions of operation, maintenance and construction work.
  • The ability to implement and understand work hazards and applicable safety measures needed for the job.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbols.
  • Ability to deal with abstract and concrete concepts.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:

  • Maintain a valid commercial license from the State of Mississippi.
  • Class ‘B’ CDL is required.

  • airborne particles, vibrations, loud noises, and occasionally toxic chemicals.
