City of Tualatin is Hiring a Recreation Leader I - Summer Camp - On Call/Seasonal Near Tualatin, OR


The City of Tualatin is recruiting an energetic, enthusiastic, and outgoing individual to assist in leading our youth recreation programs. Come be a part of our recreation staff and make a difference in a young person's life this summer by facilitating exercise, adventure, and learning via our youth summer camps and programs.
 
This position organizes and presents or supervises assigned recreational activities or programs for department program areas that are temporary or seasonal in nature; does related work as required. Monitors facilities and city assets during parks and recreation programs.
This position will work primarily with the Summer Day Camp program for kids in grades 1-6. The schedule is planned to be approximately 40 hours a week from June 24th through August 16th, plus training dates prior to camp start. Opportunity for intermittent, on call work is possible throughout the rest of the year.
Plans, organizes and conducts recreation programs, special activities and events.
Develops neighborhood interest and participation in programs. Publicizes activities and programs.
Ensures appropriate maintenance, security and safety of recreational facility, activities, programs and participants.
May lead work of recreation aides or volunteers.
Recognizes unsafe conditions and reports to proper authorities.
Enforces policies. Plans, organizes and instructs basic recreation, programs, and events.
Performs general clerical and staff functions, including but not limited to: preparing reports, performing activity registration, checking out equipment, answering phones and inquiries, providing information to the public, and various general custodial tasks.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: One year of paid or volunteer experience in leading recreational or related activities.
Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
 
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
 
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Possession of a valid Oregon driver's license and acceptable driving record. First Aid/CPR certification at time of appointment or within a time frame determined by management.
Other Skills and Abilities: 
Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work with children and their parents. Ability to maintain effective relationships with associates, volunteers, participants, parents and the general public.
Skill in the leadership of several broad types of recreation activities. Personal skills in specialty activities and in their leadership. Ability to plan and implement various recreational activities designed for children.
Ability to operate a personal computer and related software.
Ability to maintain records and make reports.
Ability to present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
 
Other Qualifications: Knowledge of principles, terminology, techniques, methods, supplies and equipment, basic rules and skills involved in a variety of recreation programs. Ability to instruct and supervise recreation programs efficiently. Knowledge of techniques in supervising various recreational activities. Some knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of the recreation profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The bulk of the hours will be in June - August, daytime hours to staff youth summer camps. On call hours may be available throughout the remainder of the year. Day camps for children will run for grades entering 1st through 6th, and will be held June 24th to August 16th. Additionally, staff will be scheduled to work no more than 40 hours per week in this placement. Candidates who are available for the entire summer camp season will be given strong preference.
All staff are expected to attend summer staff training, which will be held early to mid-June.
