BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB: Ensures that the city’s vehicles and equipment are maintained in good working condition. Duties include performing skilled and specialized mechanical repairs on vehicles and equipment.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Fleet Services Superintendent. This is a non-supervisory position. Frequent contact with other city departments regarding services and repair of their vehicles and equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: This is a description of the way this job is currently performed; there is potential for accommodation.

Performs preventative maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment to include State Inspections.

Performs basic wheel alignments on vehicles.

Performs repairs and maintenance on heavy equipment such as backhoes and loaders.

Performs complex gasoline and diesel engine tune-ups and overhauls.

Performs specialized work and repairs on engines, carburetors, transmissions, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and other complex vehicle components.

Disassembles, repairs, services, reassembles, and reinstalls vehicle accessories and systems, including brakes, transmissions, hydraulic or pneumatic systems, cooling systems and radiators, air conditioning, suspension, carburetors and fuel injection, starters and pumps.

Operates and uses an acetylene torch in the repair of equipment.

Transports vehicles and equipment.

Enters maintenance and service information in fleet software program.

Works outside in hot, cold, and/or wet weather.

Performs such other related duties as may be assigned

Qualifications

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

High school graduation, or its equivalent, plus four (4) years of experience in automotive repair. Completion of an accredited automotive, diesel or related certification program may substitute for required experience up to a maximum of six (6) months.

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES REQUIRED:

• Texas Class “C” Driver’s License

Must have ability to obtain a Class B CDL within one (1) year of employment.

• Must obtain a State Inspectors license within (90) days of employment with the City.
• ASE Certifications preferred.
