CITY OF TAMPA is Hiring a City Surveyor (FT) Near Tampa, FL

NATURE OF WORK:

The employee plans, assigns, schedules, supervises, and reviews the work of crews, including contractual services, involved in performing a variety of engineering surveys.
Work is of considerable difficulty and involves organizing and coordinating the field activities of several crews engaged in taking measurements, determining distance, elevation, areas, and other features of the earth’s surface.
Under direction, employee must utilize technical knowledge and experience to determine work priorities, establish and adjust work standards, and develop schedules.
Subordinates’ work is reviewed in progress to ensure that proper equipment and methods are used, corrections applied, and computations made so that accurate data is obtained.
Considerable initiative and independent judgment are required in providing training, assistance and supervision to subordinates in the use of various methods, techniques, and equipment for obtaining accurate survey data and in performing personnel management functions.
Work is reviewed through conferences, oral and written reports submitted, observation, and results obtained.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Plans, assigns, schedules, supervises, and reviews the work of crews involved in conducting such engineering surveys as alignment, construction, installation, detailed, cross-sectional and utility surveys, and surveys through easements; administers, manages, and reviews contract surveys performed by outside consultants; signs as registered Land Surveyor on projects requiring such certification and performs requisite functions.
Conducts searches of tax records, deeds, office files, court records, aerial photos, private surveys, and other sources to obtain information; performs drafting work as required to provide essential information; reviews plans for construction layout; attends preconstruction meetings on contract bids.
Meets with survey party chiefs to discuss problems; maintains awareness of project status and makes new assignments; reviews survey notes, reports, sketches, calculations, and profile/plan sheets to ensure accuracy, completeness, and legibility; visits survey parties in the field; assists and directs subordinates in solving technical problems involving unfamiliar methods or concepts, or problems created by ground conditions, crowded/confined work locations; plans crews’ work sequences to coincide with successive phases of construction or other work operations; selects, interprets, and applies technical guidelines in situations where precedents do not fully apply; makes cut sheets for laying out utilities.
Prepares and presents periodic project status reports; provides training and develops work methods/procedures modifications to improve work and/or quality of final product; initiates purchase requisitions for supplies and equipment.
Interprets technical sketches and blueprints to peers and/or subordinates in order to facilitate their understanding; utilizes survey data and calculates distances, grade, and elevations; processes and analyzes collected electronic data; assists other employees in the use of the electronic data collector; operates radios, pagers, etc. to communicate with necessary parties.
Provides input on section budget including projecting equipment and personnel needs; recommends employment, promotions, transfers, demotions, suspensions, and dismissals; administers discipline, responds to grievances, completes evaluations.
Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Extensive knowledge of: basic surveying techniques, methods, and procedures; materials, equipment, and tools used in conducting a variety of engineering surveys.
Considerable knowledge of: basic geometry; work hazards and applicable safety precautions.
Working knowledge of: advanced surveying techniques, methods, and procedures; supervisory and basic training techniques; planning and scheduling techniques; legal principles affecting survey work.
Ability to: develop work plans and schedules; diagnose training and development needs of subordinates and deliver training programs; coordinate activities of others and evaluate work product for accuracy and completeness; maintain accurate, complete records and communicate moderately complex ideas and information orally and in writing; read and interpret survey notes and engineering data; perform mathematical computations rapidly and accurately using standard tables and formulas; pursue a logical line of inquiry to a conclusion; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the general public; recognize conditions which lead to unsafe work or unacceptable products; confront difficult/unpleasant situations and be decisive; develop and implement policies; evaluate the adequacy of data and prepare project and time estimates.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited college of university with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field and three (3) years of professional surveying experience including one (1) year of supervisory experience; or, graduation from an accredited high school and completion of two years of college with course work in engineering, surveying, or related subjects with five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in conducting surveys and one (1) year of related supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:

Registration as a Land Surveyor in the State of Florida.
Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.

EXAMINATION:

Evaluation of education and experience.
Drug testing is included in all pre-employment processing.

COMMENTS:

During periods when the Mayor issues an emergency declaration for the City of Tampa, all employees may be required to work in preparation, response or recovery activities related to the stated emergency.
