City of Tamarac is Hiring a Fleet Mechanic III Near City of Tamarac, FL

Performs complex technical activities pertaining to the proper functioning and maintenance of the city’s vehicle and equipment fleet. Work involves conducting safety and emission inspections, performing preventive and corrective maintenance and repairs to vehicles, equipment, and systems, and guiding lower-level personnel on proper equipment operation, diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and inspection methods, techniques, and procedures. 

Work is performed under minimal supervision with moderate latitude in the use of initiative. Position relies on experience and exercises some independent judgement to determine the best approach by using and interpreting policies and procedures. Reports to the Fleet Senior Mechanic or designee.

Provides guidance and oversight to assigned fleet mechanics or specific repairs or maintenance; reviews in-progress and completed work to ensure conformance to instructions, standards, and specifications.

Identifies issues and problem areas regarding work performed and suggests resolutions to lower-level personnel; oversees the fleet facility/shop and ensures the safety of the work environment by enforcing safety rules and regulations; trains and/or ensures the training of newly hired and lower-level personnel.

Performs specialized machinist work including welding, body repair, and painting; designs, modifies, and installs hydraulic systems and other special accessories.

Administers a preventive maintenance schedule for the city’s fire and rescue trucks and apparatus; performs maintenance and repair for the city’s fire fleet.

Repairs a wide variety of vehicles, equipment, and their integrated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and computerized components and sub-component systems. 

Isolates cause of malfunction by using diagnostic and other troubleshooting equipment; performs minor bodywork when necessary and ensures proper functioning.

Repairs, replaces, and adjusts parts such as brakes, steering systems, pumps, hydraulic rams, and all other automotive vehicles systems; tunes engines and aligns wheels.

Rebuilds engines, transmissions, rear-end assemblies, differentials, carburetors, and related components; performs tests on rebuilt units for proper operation.

Analyzes and diagnoses malfunctions in electronic and computerized fuel and ignition systems.

Adjusts and repairs front and rear wheel or multi-wheel drive vehicles and installs, adjusts, or repairs air-conditioning systems. 

Cleans and changes filters on automotive equipment, checks compressors, radiators, radiator hoses. 

Operates computerized diagnostic equipment and shop tools such as grinders, vacuum gauge, voltage and regulator tester, wheel balancer, wheel pullers, air tools, scope, timing light, and various hand tools and other equipment standard to automotive repair work. 

Performs preventive maintenance on all city vehicles and trucks, small and heavy equipment, backhoes, bulldozers, and tractors; determines off-line repair schedules, coordinating repair time with operators.

Responds to field sites and roadways to perform emergency road service on city vehicles and equipment.

Inspects the condition of emergency generators per routine schedule and as requested; performs repairs and routine service; monitors and ensures adequate supply of fuel is available for emergency generators.

Uses the City’s computerized fleet management system to record labor, material, and equipment utilized in making repairs.

Cleans, washes, and vacuums vehicles and participates in the maintenance and upkeep of an orderly Fleet Services facility.

Adheres to all City and public health and safety guidelines and protocols; performs job functions in a safe manner and reports all safety hazards per established policies and procedures.

Maintains quality communication and interaction with all City employees, representatives from external organizations, and the public to maintain good will toward the city and to project a positive City image.

Maintains on-call work availability as assigned, to prepare for, respond to, or recover from a hurricane, tropical weather event, or other emergency to meet the city’s obligation to remain operational before, during, and after the event; duties assigned may or may not be typical of the job and are contingent upon the needs of the city and the residents because of the event.

Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with those interacted with during work regardless of race, color, religious creed, national origin, ancestry, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, genetic information, disability, political affiliation, military service, or diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has no supervisory responsibilities. 

High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by four (4) years of experience as an automotive or heavy equipment journeyman mechanic, including one (1) year in a lead worker capacity; or an equivalent combination of education, certification, training and/or experience. 

Required Certifications and Licenses

Must possess and maintain a valid State of Florida driver license and the ability to drive a city-owned vehicle per established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines; within six months of hire, must acquire a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL).

National Incident Management System (NIMS) training will be required (and sponsored) according to job duties and responsibilities.

Must possess or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire, certification in three (3) areas of the automotive or medium/heavy truck series by the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (NIASE), and designation as an Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT). 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

NIASE Certification in a minimum of one area is preferred.
