Job Definition

EXCITING OPPORTUNITY!

Join the Parks, Recreation and Forestry team in Superior to help beautify and maintain public outdoor spaces in our City that provide all enhanced quality of life, health and environmental benefits to our visitors and residents of all ages and abilities.

Hours

Summer hours(Apr - Oct) Mon - Thurs 7am to 5pm

Winter hours(Nov - Mar) Mon - Fri 8am - 3pm

Emergency and overtime call outs as required.

Work Location : City Garage 2301 Hill Avenue, Superior, WI 54880

Starting Wage : $22.57 base starting wage for Light Equipment Operator. Opportunities to work in higher paying positions once you possess and maintain a CDL.

Medium Equipment Operator wages start at $24.68 and Heavy Equipment Operators start at $26.78. You must have a class A CDL license to work as a Heavy Equipment Operator.

Driver License / Endorsement Requirement : Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Parks, Recreation, and Forestry employees must obtain and maintain a valid class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement within twelve (12) months of hire.

The City will assist with offering a CDL training program upon hire

Employment Standards

TYPICAL TASKS

Plant, weed, water, mulch and general maintenance for garden beds in parks and along vegetated corridors of Belknap Street and Tower Avenue.

Turf maintenance, including mowing, line trimming, edging, seeding, mulching, aerating, and raking. Mowing includes parks, vacant lots, roadsides, landfill and trails.

Tree work including planting, watering, pruning, removals and clean up.

Fall leaf and spring brush cleanup operations.

Trail construction and maintenance. Brook paths and sidewalks using a tractor with a broom attachment.

Ballfield maintenance including placing and leveling aglime, dragging infields, placing and removing bases, mowing outfields, chalking baselines, and fence line trimming.

Outdoor ice rink maintenance including flooding, brooming, and snow removal.

Remove snow from city lots, paths, sidewalks, and streets / alleys using a pickup truck with a plow or a dump truck with a plow and wing, a prinoth, shovels, or tractors with snowblowers..

Set up and take down of Holiday decorations. Signage, garbage / recycling, cone set up, and other support for City-held and special events on Public Property.

Maintain facilities including cleaning buildings and bathrooms. Remove / cover graffiti and perform other painting tasks as needed.

Empty garbage and recycling receptacles, and fill Mutt Mitt dispensers. Collect and dispose litter and windblown material.

Operate, fuel, clean, grease, maintain, inspect a variety of equipment, as required per project. Ability to operate a variety of hand and power tools.

Transport equipment, construction supplies, and materials.

Special projects and other tasks to support Park operations and programs.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

WORKING KNOWLEDGE OF

  • Gardens, parks, trails, and landscaping best practices.
  • Materials and equipment relevant to Parks, Recreation, and Forestry programs and operations.
  • Horticulture including gardening, landscaping, and tree work experience desirable.
  • Proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).

ABILITY TO

  • Operate multi-purpose motorized equipment in a thorough, effective and efficient manner.
  • Use and care for tools and equipment used in the general maintenance, construction and repair work.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers and the public.
  • Make minor repairs and adjustments of equipment.
  • Keep records for billing purposes.
  • Work under adverse weather conditions.
  • Safely lift 60 pounds from ground level to overhead level.
  • Perform the physical requirements of the position.

Requirements / Special Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

Training and experience : Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledges and abilities is qualifying.

A typical way to obtain these knowledges and abilities would be :

Equivalent to high school graduation or possession of GED certification and six months experience performing laboring tasks in the operation of road equipment and in road construction or maintenance.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Skills Test Requirement : Operation of multi-purpose light equipment.

Driver License Requirement : Must possess and maintain valid Class B Commercial Driver's License. Parks and Recreation and Street and ESD Collection Unit employees must in addition maintain a tanker endorsement to drive tankers.

Residency Requirement : No residency requirement.

Background Investigation Requirement : Must pass a background investigation as required by U.S. Department of Transportation standards.

Post Job Offer Medical Examination Requirement : Must pass medical examination as required for the occupation unit including a lifting capacity test.

Drug / Alcohol Testing Requirement : Must pass pre-employment drug screen and will be subject to drug / alcohol testing as prescribed by U.

S. Department of Transportation standards.
