City of Suffolk is Hiring an Utilities Locator Near Suffolk, VA

Under general supervision, performs work in the location and maintenance of underground utility service for the City Public Utilities Department. Work involves locating underground utility lines as required by the Miss Utility of Virginia system. Work also involves performing preventative maintenance on water and sewer infrastructures and hydrants. Employee is responsible for locating underground leaks and performing regular leak detection surveys. Reports to the Assistant Line Maintenance Manager.To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily.   • Locates underground utilities according to tickets generated by Miss Utility of Virginia and in accordance with the Virginia Damage Prevention Act and reports results of work.
  • Assists work crews in water and sewer valve operations as required.
  • Processes paper work associated with locating underground water and sewer services; maintains filing system.
  • Tests fire hydrant flows.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on fire hydrants and valves and on water and sewer infrastructures; makes repairs as needed.
  • Maintains electronic databases and operates semi-complex computer aided devices to locate water and sewer system.
  • Performs water leak surveys using complex equipment; records appropriate information during leak detection surveys.
  • Assists other divisions with the Public Utilities division with information gathering details.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Graduation from high school and 1 to 2 years' experience in repair and maintenance of water and sewer distribution systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Requires a valid driver's license. 
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, materials and equipment employed in locating underground utility lines.
  • Knowledge of the operations and function of the Miss Utility of Virginia system.
  • Knowledge of the operation of the equipment and tools used in the location and maintenance of underground utility lines.
  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of the City. Is skilled in the operation of equipment and tools used in maintaining water and sewer distribution valves.
  • Skilled in performing leak detection surveys.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effect working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Ability to speak/signal people to convey or exchange information.Includes receiving instructions, oral and written assignments and/or directions from superiors
  • Ability to read work orders and requisition forms.Requires the ability to prepare work orders and time cards, using prescribed format.
  • Ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems and to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, to follow oral and written instructions.Must be able to use and interpret auto mechanic terminology and language.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract totals; to multiply and divide.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
  • Ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.
