***This is a Seasonal/Part-time position anticipated to start June 2024,
and end August 31, 2024.***
Summer Youth Workers play a vital role in supporting various municipal functions and projects within the city. This position provides an opportunity for youth to gain practical work experience, develop valuable skills, and contribute to the community. Summer Youth Workers may be assigned to different departments or projects based on their interests, skills, and the needs of the city. Under the supervision of experienced staff members, they assist with a wide range of tasks and projects aimed at improving city services and facilities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Summer Youth Workers may be assigned to different departments throughout the city based on skills, interest and the needs of each department.

  • Parks & Recreation
    - Participates in camp programs, classes, activities, and events; leads crafts, games and other activities for children.
  • Animal Shelter- Assist with the care and feeding of animals: This involves feeding, watering, and providing basic care for the animals at the shelter.
  • Social Services
  • Library- Assist with helping patrons find books, resources, and information, answering questions, and providing guidance on using library services and technology.
  • Public Utilities- Supports public utilities staff with the operation and maintenance of essential public utility services to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of water, sewer systems for the community.
  • Public Works- Assist public works staff with various tasks as needed, including administrative duties, equipment maintenance, and inventory management.

Required Qualifications

Must be between the ages of 16 and 19 and enrolled in high school. Applicants must be 16 years of age by start of employment. Enrollment in high school is required. June graduates are still eligible

Supplemental Information

  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others regarding the application of procedures and standards to specific situations.
  • Ability to read a variety of reports, informational documentation, directions, instructions, and methods and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare required paperwork with proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, using all parts of speech.
  • Ability to speak with and before others with poise, voice control, and confidence using correct English and well-modulated voice.
  • Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change.
  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.
  • Ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal stress when confronted with an emergency.
  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the City and or departmental practices as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Summer Youth Worker.
  • Ability to perform various administrative tasks and assignments to support the development of public programming.
  • Skill to interact with adults and children participating in events and activities.
  • Ability to present program information and monitor activities.
  • Ability to provide input regarding programming activities.
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and methods utilized within the department.
  • Ability to implement policy changes within the department and ensure adherence to all establishes guidelines, procedures and policies.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with subordinates, supervisors and members of the general public, and all other groups involved in the activities of the department.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and work with little direct supervision as situations warrant.
