City of Suffolk is Hiring a Deputy Sheriff II Near Suffolk, VA

Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties in support of the legal and judicial functions of the Sheriff's office and the activities of the local courts. Work includes serving a variety of civil process documents; executing evictions, levies, and other court ordered actions; and transporting prisoners and other persons to and from court. Employee must exercise tact, courtesy and firmness in contact with the general public. Employee is subject to the usual hazards of law enforcement work.

  • Monitors inmates in lockup area and monitors and operates building security system.
  • Serves civil process documents, including court orders, summons, subpoenas, debt warrants and other related court papers to ensure their correct and legal service.
  • Sets and executes evictions for court ordered possession, merchandise pick up from merchandisers, and levies and sales on property as ordered by the courts.
  • Transports juveniles and prisoners to and from court and provides after-duty on-call transports as needed.
  • Transports mental patients for evaluations to hospitals and treatment facilities.
  • Serves legal papers such as summons and warrants and civil process papers; explains briefly the meaning of the papers served and makes arrests when necessary.
  • Provides credible testimony in a court of law.
  • Prepares various reports and forms such as case files, offense reports, property vouchers, etc.
  • Assist Suffolk Police Department at traffic accident scenes by performing first aid, securing and clearing accident scenes, directing traffic or as otherwise requested.
  • Assists Suffolk Police Department investigating misdemeanor crimes, including processing minor crime scenes including collecting, packaging and vouchering evidence and photographing/sketching the scene.
  • Assists the Suffolk Police Department with a variety of duties such as but not limited to the investigation of felonies and misdemeanors, including computer/white collar crime, property crime, juvenile crime, vice crime, domestic relations/abuse crime as well as monitors radio calls; responds to complaint calls; investigates crimes and disturbances.
  • Completes administrative tasks, including preparing felony case, investigative, offense reports, serving legal papers, including summons and warrants.
  • Assists State and Federal agencies in conducting various investigations.
  • Teaches programs based on topic areas of assigned unit, including preparing visual aids, lesson plans, handouts, etc., participating in extracurricular activities and building a rapport with program participants to accomplish program intent.
  • Coordinates law enforcement efforts with civic leagues and community groups, including attending civic league and PTA meetings, participating in community functions, acting as liaison between schools and Sheriff's Office, monitoring interior and exterior of school buildings and developing a rapport between Sheriff's Office and students to deter crime in schools.
  • Provides security for any City functions as directed; provides security/escort services for City personnel as directed; organizes and conducts security assessment drills; develops, implements and maintains physical security systems for City owned facilities; maintains security access data base and assists with issuance of new security cards; conducts CEPTED analysis of facilities and office spaces; conducts security awareness programs for employees
  • Secures warrants from the magistrate's office or the courts.
  • Serves as Court Bailiff as needed in circuit, general district and juvenile courts.
  • Escorts funeral processions, parade, public figures and other special assignments.
  • Assists disabled motorists with simple repair work such as changing flat tires and unlocking doors or by contacting others for assistance; may provide directions, answer simple inquiries, etc.
  • Reports unsafe conditions in City streets, sidewalks or public facilities; reports traffic problems.
  • May investigate communicable diseases and exposure; coordinates initial and follow up medical care for exposed employees; maintains medical records, testing and training.

Graduation from high school or GED equivalent and 4 years of sworn law enforcement experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
 
Must be DCJS certified.  Must possess a valid driver's license. Must complete 40 hours of in-service training bi-annually. Must pass the departmental firearms course annually.
  • Knowledge of civil and criminal papers, and the processes and procedures involved in serving them.
  • Knowledge of the processes and procedures for executing evictions, court ordered property possessions, and other assigned court ordered actions.
  • Knowledge of the procedures and of appropriate responsive actions involved in transporting juveniles, prisoners and mental patients to and from court.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of general law enforcement work.
  • Knowledge of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of federal, State and local laws pertaining to law enforcement work.
  • Knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Skilled in the use of firearms and other law enforcement equipment.
  • Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people or things.
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions, assignments and/or directions from the supervisor.
  • Ability to read a variety of reports, records and memorandums. Requires the ability to prepare reports, correspondence, charts, graphs, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence.
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Requires the ability to assess critical situations and establish methods to resolve such situations.
  • Ability to utilize mathematical formulas. Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Must be able to utilize decimals and percentages.
  • Ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
  • Ability to use sound judgment to act quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to express ideas effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective public relations.
  • Ability to exercise tact, courtesy, firmness and fairness in contact with the general public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships necessitated by work assignments.
