City of St. Petersburg is Hiring a Nature Preserve Ranger Near Saint Petersburg, FL

This is specialized work assisting in the daily operation of the City’s Boyd Hill Nature Preserve, including the implementation, and conducting of related environmental educational programs, the monitoring of campgrounds and park facilities, and other related activities. Work involves creating and conducting informative guided tours, programs and presentations for the general public; assisting supervisors in the development of special events and coordinating volunteer activities; maintaining gardens; caring and feeding of captive wildlife, including birds of prey; some maintenance of the preserve; and enforcement of preserve rules and regulations. Work also involves performing routine patrols and rental inspections; assisting with cashier and camping reservation duties; and cleaning/maintenance of campgrounds, rental facilities, and restrooms. Work will require considerable public contact and the exercise of independent good judgment, tact, and diplomacy; outdoor duties in all types of weather; evening, weekend, and holiday work hours; and occasional work in the nature preserve which requires travel off the established trails.

Salary: $18.54 - $26.94 Hourly

To Qualify


Minimum Qualifications.
Applicants must:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented with some coursework in environmental management, environmental science, physical or biological science, education, or a related field.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Successfully meet the State of Florida Level II background screening standards (Florida State Statutes 435.01-435.06).
  • Have knowledge of and can identify Florida ecological systems, flora, and fauna.
  • Be skilled in public speaking and developing and conducting presentations and tours.
  • Be able to understand and communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred applicants:

  • Have one or more years of experience in naturalist, environmental, or parks related work.
  • Have knowledge of Florida natural and cultural history.
  • Have experience with invasive plant management.
  • Have knowledge of City rules and regulations pertaining to the care and use of City parks.
  • Have some supervisory and public contact experience.
  • Have basic computer skills.
  • Can handle and care for birds of prey.
  • Have National Association for Interpretation or Project WILD Experience.
