City of St. Petersburg is Hiring a Construction Inspection Supervisor Near Saint Petersburg, FL

This is responsible supervisory and participatory technical work in planning, inspecting, and directing the inspection of all types and phases of public works and related construction projects. Work involves ensuring construction projects conform to plans, established construction standards and engineering specifications, quality of workmanship, proper materials, and contractual specifications and obligations; conferring with and advising contractors and architects relative to the interpretation and application of City standards and specifications; involves important contacts with contractors, utility companies, officials of the County, State and Federal governments, other City departments and the public relative to current projects, future construction plans, and the coordination of related support activities; preparing reports and maintaining daily activity records; and participating in the selection, placement, promotion, safety, training, appraisal and discipline of assigned Construction Inspector staff as well as Utility Locator Technicians. Work requires the exercise of considerable independent, sound judgment and initiative in carrying out assignments.

Salary: $29.56 - $47.65 Hourly

Minimum Qualifications.
Applicants must:

  • Possess a valid high school diploma or GED equivalency.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver License.
  • Be able to understand and follow detailed written and oral instructions.
  • Be able to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Be able to tactfully, fairly and impartially enforce contract specifications and safety and work performance standards and regulations.
  • Be able to read and interpret complex designs and specifications applicable to large-scale public works construction projects.
  • Be skilled in the use of a computer and software such Microsoft Office including Outlook, Word, Teams, and Excel and Adobe Acrobat, to record data and generate reports, correspondence, and email.
  • Have three (3) years of progressive and responsible experience on public works projects as an inspector, contractor, owner’s representative, or field engineer.
  • Have some knowledge of contract administration and construction management, involving planning/scheduling, estimating the costs for construction material, labor and equipment.
  • Have some experience in reviewing and approving as-built plans on working drawings indicating actual work done by contractors; comparing and verifying quantity of work shown on as-built to final pay estimates.
  • Be able to review and compute monthly pay estimates and recommend contract payments; request and evaluate test results against City standards; request contractors to rectify substandard work.
  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.

Desirable Qualifications. Preferred Applicants:

  • Have some supervisory experience.
  • Have considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required in construction.
  • Have considerable knowledge of engineering principles and practices related to construction.
  • Have experience locating underground water and sewer utilities; and have knowledge and experience with “Irthnet”, or other web-based locating ticket management software used by Sunshine State One Call of Florida.
  • Are able to prepare budget requests and monitor expenditures.
  • Are able to competently and tactfully critique the work of others to ensure proper standards are met.
