City of St. Joseph is Hiring a Laboratory Supervisor Near Saint Joseph, MO

JOB TITLE: Laboratory Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Public Works & Transportation
DIVISION: Water Protection
SALARY: $25.22/hr, ($52,458.00/yr)

Job Summary/Scope
Assists the Technical Services Manager in overseeing the Water Protection laboratory. Runs laboratory tests on various types of water samples. Places orders for supplies and maintains lab equipment. Maintains accurate and current records on test data.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assists in the work planning, scheduling, and supervision of the laboratory analysts.
  • Monitors day-to-day operations of the laboratory.
  • Oversees laboratory inventory and purchasing of supplies and materials.
  • Assists in the compilation and submittal of routine discharge monitoring reports (DMRs) to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR).
  • Analyzes water and wastewater samples using wet chemistry, spectroscopy, spectrometry, ISE meters, and other techniques on automated and manual laboratory equipment.
  • Operates, repairs, calibrates and performs preventative maintenance on lab equipment.
  • Prepares fresh reagents and standards for tests as needed.
  • Oversees daily quality control monitoring of analytical results and ASSISTS with the ongoing development and improvement of the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Assists in planning and execution of the annual DMR Quality Assurance study.
  • Assists with the development and annual review and recertification of Laboratory Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Records test results and maintains accurate and current written logs and laboratory database records.
  • Manages Laboratory and Operations databases daily including data entry, report generation, and configuration.
  • Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Fills in as Laboratory Analyst as needed.
  • Obtains water and wastewater samples as needed
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Skills in laboratory analysis and problem solving.
  • Skills in effective communications.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of theories of chemistry and operation of analytical instrumentation.
  • Skills in summarizing data for submittal to control authorities, reviewing and addressing issues of non-compliances.
  • Ability to plan and schedule work assignments.
  • Ability to lead and direct the work activities of others.
  • Requires skilled and precise application of sampling techniques and accurate recording of results.
  • Skills and knowledge gained from prior experience in same or related field required.
  • Skills in detailed record keeping
  • Ability to use laboratory equipment including ICP-MS, analytical balance and, DO meter, pH and ISE meters and automated composite samplers.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Must obtain a Missouri “D” level Wastewater Treatment license within one year of hiring.
  • Must obtain a Missouri “D” level Wastewater Analyst license within one year of hiring.
  • Must obtain the highest level of Wastewater Analyst license available within four years of hiring.
Material and Equipment Directly Used
Operates a variety of laboratory test equipment and standard office machines such as computers and copier/scanner. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required.
Working Environment/Physical Requirement
Work normally performed in a laboratory environment with occasional visits to field sites. Must have hearing and visual acuity. Environment requires ability to walk over uneven terrain, bend, stoop and perform other similar manual tasks. Frequently lifts from ten to 20 pounds. Exposure to dust, fumes and infrequently exposed to varying intensities of noise. Some overnight or day travel may be required for business purposes. Vacation and other leave scheduling shall be requested of and approved by the appropriate supervisor.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry or related degree preferred. Or two years of related work experience may be substituted for each one year of formal education if it provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
