City of St. George is Hiring a Fleet Journey Technician Near Saint George, UT

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, maintains and repairs diesel, gasoline, and various other types of

vehicles. This is skilled mechanical work for the City of St. George.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks,

knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks

performed by positions in this class.)

1. Performs skilled mechanical work in repair, maintenance, and overhaul of a wide variety of both light

and heavy construction equipment, including fire apparatus and police, water, power, sewer, and street

maintenance equipment.

2. Repairs and services automobiles and light trucks, including major engine overhauls, adjustment of

computer command controls, electronic ignitions, brakes, clutches, diesel engines, and transmissions.

3. Diagnoses drivetrain and exhaust after treatment components using sophisticated computer testing

equipment. Performs adjustments or replaces defective parts as required.

4. Performs oxyacetylene and electronic welding as required. Fabricates specialized equipment. Lays

out, cuts, and fits material for welding.

5. Performs state safety inspections.

6. Performs detailed repair notes on completed repairs for future repair order history, of parts and

materials used for work orders.

7. Diagnoses equipment malfunctions to determine the most effective and economical means of repair.

Makes decisions of what repairs will be made and completes all required work to achieve proper

vehicle performance.

8. Performs preventive maintenance for all City equipment and vehicles such as lubrication, oil change,

and minor repairs as needed.

9. Up-fits various vehicles (police, fire, utility) that require extensive electrical and computer software

knowledge and procedures.

10. Reads, diagnoses, and comprehends diagnostic tools using OBDII technology, including programmable

logic systems, and installs and repairs such systems.

11. Understands, diagnoses, and repairs multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.

12. Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Work performed in an automotive repair shop environment. Moderately heavy physical activity. Required

to push, pull, or lift medium heavy weights exerting up to 40-50 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10-25

pounds of force frequently. Bends, stretches, twists, or reaches with body, arms, and/or legs. Detects or tells

the difference between sounds that vary in pitch and loudness. Moves hand, hand together with arm, or two

hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects. Quickly and repeatedly adjusts the controls of a machine or

a vehicle to exact positions. Makes precisely coordinated movements of fingers of one or both hands to

grasp, manipulate, or assemble small objects. Matches or detects differences between colors, including

shades of color and brightness. Stands, walks, or sits uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to hot,

cold, wet, humid, or windy conditions caused by weather. Exposure to constant or intermittent sounds or a

pitch or level sufficient to cause marked distraction or possible hearing loss. Exposure to conditions, such as

fumes, noxious odors, dust, mist, gases, and poor ventilation, which affect the respiratory system, eyes, and

the skin. Exposure to stress because of human behavior.

Note: Employees in this classification:

  • May be required to work unconventional shifts and to respond to emergencies.
  • Must supply own hand tools and rollaway to perform duties as required.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Training in CAN/multiplexing data systems required.

Recent experience in Automotive/Diesel CAN/Multiplexing systems and current Automotive/Diesel

technology.

Experience: Minimum of four 4) years full time currently employed in the field or recent experience in

Automotive/Diesel truck or Heavy equipment repair, electrical repair, and diagnosis of complex

CAN/Multiplexing systems with current technology of passenger vehicles and light duty pickups.

Thorough knowledge of Controller Area Network (CAN) system network communication. Experience

and ability to wire and/or repair any components in a complete electrical system. Additionally, post high

school education or vocational certificate/degree in Automotive/Diesel repair may be substituted for two

(2) years of required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Licenses and/or Certifications:

  • Within 90 days of hire obtain any four ASE certifications and maintain certifications. Eight (8) years of

experience may be substituted for certifications with demonstrated ability to perform the essential

functions of the position.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license. A valid Utah Commercial Driver License must be obtained within

six months of hire and be maintained throughout employment.

  • State safety inspection certification for buses and heavy trucks must be obtained within 90 days of

employment.

  • Refrigerant recovery and recycling certification must be obtained within 90 days of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge and expertise in performing highly specialized maintenance along with the ability to safely

operate all City equipment, i.e., emergency vehicles, heavy equipment, etc.

Knowledge of:

  • Machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Oxyacetylene and electronic welding.
  • Electrical, hydraulic, and fuel systems; pumps; gas, natural gas, and diesel engines; cooling systems; up-

fit wiring; and transmissions.

  • OBDII system and CAN system.
  • Multiplex data systems using laptop computer technology.
  • Diagnosis of complex computers and their communication process.

Skills in:

  • Repairing City equipment using the needed tools.
  • Determining causes of operating errors and deciding proper action to correct errors.
  • Determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed and performing routine maintenance on

equipment.

  • Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
  • Basic use of computers including proficiency in typing detailed notes.
  • Electrical up-fitting of public safety vehicles.
  • Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions,

or approaches to problems.

Ability to:

  • Operate a laptop/diagnostic computer.
  • Read and analyze data and apply strategies based on the diagnostics to repair air bag deployment system,

vehicle anti-lock brake system, electronic fuel injection, air conditioning, hydraulic systems, and diesel

systems, etc. on light and heavy vehicles.

  • Evaluate vehicle safety needs, and exercise independent judgment to ensure reliable vehicle performance.
  • Perform state safety inspections.
  • Understand and comply with all OSHA regulations.
  • Read and write in English at a business level.
  • Understand and explain complex wiring schematics.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $26.50 - $31.91 per hour
