Description

WORK HOURS: 7:00AM TO 4:00 PM
This position requires an individual to drive an assigned route and collect waste materials placed in designated pick-up areas.

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Collects waste materials from assigned locations using a semi-automated collection vehicle.
  • Makes determination on which items to collected in compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Prepares notices to customers when items cannot be collected due to non-compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Plans a daily route when assigned to the clam truck, separating materials as required for this method of collection.
  • Collects containers at construction sites and other locations; transports the contents to the landfill or transfer station.
  • Operates the "clam truck" for the pickup of larger and heavier individual items such as appliances and other similar objects.
  • Ensures collection vehicle is properly maintained by conducting a daily checklist and making repairs, as needed; reports significant maintenance or repair problems to Supervisor and Supervisor of Vehicle Maintenance.
  • Cleans the collection vehicle in accordance with policy prior to beginning collection activity or after the completion of daily collection work.
  • Responds to citizen questions regarding methods and limitations on collection. Refers questions and problems as necessary to the Supervisor.
  • Files written and oral reports as required by the Supervisor.
  • Operates bulldozer, skid loader, tractor, and mower, as required.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

High School graduation or GED equivalent is preferred, supplemented by six (6) months of experience driving each category of vehicle; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license, Class B, with a preference for Class A, with an acceptable driving history.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Physical Requirements: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand; move; reach with hands and arms and communicate. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Mathematics: Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Language Ability: Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers. Ability to print and speak simple sentences.

Reasoning: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
