City of South Fulton is Hiring a FIRE CAPTAIN EMS Near Atlanta, GA

General Description

This classification is assigned to the Emergency Medical Services Division and is responsible for performing duties within the Operations Division and Emergency Medical Services. This position works a shift assignment (106 hours).

Duties and Responsibilities

The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.

  • Performs the duties of a Training Officer as assigned; assists in the development and implementation of training programs; performs needs analysis to identify training deficiencies within the department; ensures compliance with all local, state, federal, and professional requirements and standards; assists in the development of department standard operating procedures; researches and coordinates external training opportunities for department personnel.
  • Respond to calls as assigned by dispatch.
  • Serve as Incident Safety Officer.
  • Supervises those assigned to the EMS division and conducts performance evaluations.
  • Maintain records and conduct apparatus inspection to be with state compliance.
  • Assist in developing an EMT program within the department and be the lead instructor.
  • Assist in developing a program for EMTs and paramedics for recertifications and ongoing training.
  • Assist in the development and updating of policies and protocols.
  • Assist in growing and developing the EMS services provided by COSFFRD
  • Maintains a current knowledge of regulations, and policies and procedures; participates in and assists in conducting physical fitness training, training drills, conferences, and continuing education activities.
  • Assist with the Georgia State License Management System
  • Assist with developing and maintain a QI/QC program within the department
  • Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations; receives and reviews various documents including timesheets, inspection forms, incident reports, employee grievance forms, performance appraisals, and workers' compensation docs.
  • Monitors inventory levels of departmental supplies; ensures availability of adequate equipment and supplies to complete work activities; initiates orders for new or replacement materials; maintains inventory documentation.


Additional Functions

  • Assist with community events and programs for CRR.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by eight (8) years’ experience as a paid certified firefighter of which two (2) years as a sworn Fire Lieutenant.

Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license with Class E/F endorsement(s).

Must possess and maintain State of Georgia Firefighting certification, Must be a paramedic.

Must be a BLS and ACLS instructor. Be willing to obtain other EMS instructor licenses as needed.

An associate degree in fire science, paramedicine, business or public administration or a related field is preferred., Driver/Operator certification, and National Incident Management System ICS-100, ICS-200 course completion certificates.

Must have or obtain certification as a Fire Officer II within eighteen months of accepting the position.


Necessary Special Requirements:

  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age;
  • Not have been convicted of a felony more than five (5) years but less than ten (10) years prior to employment may be certified and employed as a firefighter when the person has:

(a) Successfully completed a training program following the Georgia Fire Academy curriculum and sponsored by the Department of Offender Rehabilitation;

(b) Earned and possesses a first-class firefighter diploma;

(c) Been recommended to a fire department by the proper authorities at the institution at which the training program was undertaken and met all other necessary requirements.

The Georgia Firefighter Standards and Training Council shall be the final authority with respect to authorizing employment and certification of a person who has been convicted of a felony more than five (5) years but less than ten (10) years prior to seeking employment as a firefighter for any municipal, county, or state fire department which employs three (3) or more firefighters who work a minimum of 40 hours per week and has the responsibility of preventing and suppressing fires, protecting life and property, and enforcing municipal, county, and state codes, as well as enforcing any law pertaining to the prevention and control of fires.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 150 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, hazardous materials, fire, unsafe structures, heights, confined spaces, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, toxic agents, explosives, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
