The City of Sherwood's Reserve Police Officer Program is a fantastic non-paid, volunteer opportunity for those interested of all ages, backgrounds, and careers. Reserve Police Officers are sworn law enforcement officers who volunteer on behalf of the City and perform law enforcement and crime prevention work including patrol to enforce state and local laws; report preparation, investigations and special assignments.
The mission of the Reserve Program for the City of Sherwood is to support the full-time Police Officers in the areas of patrol and community services. Reserve Police Officers receive top-notch and comprehensive training and hands-on experience to prepare them to meet the same standards as a regular full-time officer. Some of the identified training includes:
  • Reserve Academy
  • Field training with full-time officers
  • Inter-agency Firearms Skills Training (IFAST)
  • Emergency Vehicle Operations Course
  • Tactical Communications
  • Crisis Intervention
  • Defensive Tactics

Examples of Duties
This description covers the most significant essential and auxiliary duties performed by the position, but does not include other occasional work, which may be similar, related to, or a logical assignment for the position.
Essential Duties:
1. Patrol streets, businesses and residential areas to enforce traffic and criminal laws. Issue warnings or citations for violations. Perform security checks for suspicious persons or vehicles.
2. Respond to calls, including major crimes, civil complaints, thefts, assaults, family disputes, etc., and take appropriate actions. Direct traffic at accident/crime scenes as necessary. Perform CPR/First Aid as necessary.
3. Maintain written records and prepare reports regarding investigations, which are reviewed by supervisor and used for crime prevention, prosecution and office activities.
4. Be deemed credible and able to testify in court as necessary.
5. Conduct preliminary case/incident investigations and related follow-up activities; gather and preserve evidence; interview and take statements from victims and witnesses; interrogate suspects; and prepare related reports and logs.
6. Maintain effective working relationship with area law enforcement agencies. Provide assistance and back-up as requested. Provide appropriate information to other law enforcement agencies, social service agencies, the media and citizens regarding on-going investigations, department policies, officer safety information, criminal activity, gang documentation, etc.
7. Perform crime prevention activities that include surveillance patrols and dissemination of information to the public. Participate in public relations programs that may include speaking to citizen and school groups, and public service efforts.
8. Make arrests; conduct searches; transport and release prisoners.
9. Maintain cooperative working relationships with City staff, other organizations and the general public.
10. Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas.
Auxiliary Duties: Provide assistance to other staff as workload and staffing levels dictate. Maintain department issued equipment. Maintain proficiency by attending training and meetings, reading materials, and meeting with others in areas of responsibility. Maintain work areas in a clean and orderly manner.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications and Requirements:
  • Attain the age of 21 years of age by date of appointment
  • Ability to attend an extensive police academy (Academy classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, with some all-day Saturday classes. The academy will run from January to June.) and obtain a DPSST number within 18 months of appointment and maintain thereafter
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain and continuously maintain LEDS certification within 45 days of appointment
  • Must obtain and continuously maintain Community CPR and Basic First Aid Certification within 18 months of appointment
  • Must be a United States Citizen or obtain within twelve (12) months of appointment
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Successfully pass a physical fitness test
  • Successfully pass a comprehensive background investigation
  • Have no felony convictions in any jurisdiction or crime involving domestic violence (applicants with lesser criminal records will be evaluated on an individual basis).
  • Be able to contribute a minimum of 16 volunteer hours per month, including community service projects, and attend required annual training and quarterly meetings
  • Successfully complete a drug screen, medical and psychological evaluation
Knowledge of:
  • Police practices and procedures;
  • Investigative methods and techniques;
  • Federal, state and local laws;
  • Report preparation;
  • Firearm use and safety precautions.
Ability to:
  • Perform a wide range of law enforcement assignments;
  • Use and care for firearms and other police equipment and vehicles skillfully and safely in conformance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies;
  • Conduct a variety of criminal and special investigations;
  • Investigate and apprehend offenders. Interpret and enforce City, State and Federal laws, codes and ordinances;
  • Maintain verbal and physical control over suspects;
  • Understand and apply the department's use of force policy;
  • Think clearly, perform effectively, and remain calm in emergency situations;
  • Present evidence and testimony in court;
  • Prepare clear and concise administrative and technical reports;
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public;
  • Maintain contact with, and preserve good relations with, the public;
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision;
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, communicate, reach and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The position requires mobility and the ability to operate a motorized vehicle. Duties involve moving or wearing materials weighing up to 25 pounds on a regular basis; however may be required to move adults weighing up to 200 pounds on an infrequent basis. Manual dexterity and coordination are required over 50% of the work period while operating equipment such as computer keyboard, motorized vehicle, firearms, etc. Position may be required to deal with violent and combative individuals requiring considerable physical effort.
Working Conditions:
Work locations are in all types of indoor and outdoor environments. Contact with individuals who may become violent, combative, under the influence of drugs/alcohol, mentally ill or who have communicable diseases. Incumbent operates police vehicles and may be required to sit/stand/walk for extended periods while performing various duties. Position is subject to 24-hour emergency call-back. Must be available for rotating shifts including weekend assignments.
