Under general supervision, provides services to victims of crime. Coordinates and provides immediate contact with victims of crimes to offer individual and family support, information on the criminal justice system, support agency referral , aid in acquiring emergency shelter, emotional support and facilitation in other immediate needs. Provides assistance and maintains relationships with a variety of law enforcement and court agencies and provides training to staff and volunteers.
Example of Duties:
1. Assists victims of crime with support throughout the criminal justice process and provides appropriate referrals.
2. Works closely with the judicial system conveying victim requests and acts as a liaison between victims and criminal justice personnel. Reviews police incident reports to determine if victim services intervention and involvement is needed.
3. Provides victims with information on what they may encounter during a criminal trial and other proceedings. Informs victims of the status of their case including all significant proceedings and its final disposition.
4. Oversees the volunteer program and maintains employee training records, meetings and hours worked for volunteers. Represents the City during recruiting assignments and obtains applications from qualified applicants for the volunteer program.
5. Creates and updates client files and maintains records in a confidential and organized manner. Maintains log sheets, generates correspondence and responds to inquiries providing information based on victim programs and activities.
6. Develops a close working relationship with the Police Department staff and other law enforcement agencies to foster productive working relationships.
7. Researches, compiles and summarizes a variety of informational and statistical data and materials; prepares clear and concise reports, correspondence and other written material.
8. Writes grant and funding requests for the Victims Assistance Unit.
9. Attends court hearings and Orders of Protection hearings on behalf of victims to provide support and advocacy. Works with Probation staff to ensure the defendant is in compliance and provides victim regular updates.
10. Attends community events and meetings with outside agencies. Provides information to businesses, civic, school, church and/or other groups as appropriate.
11. Performs other duties as required.
Typical Qualifications:
1. Working knowledge of the Victims Bill of Rights and other federal, state and local laws pertaining to Victim Services.
2. Solid knowledge of the criminal justice system and municipal codes.
3. Knowledge of grant writing procedures and practices.
4. Solid written and verbal communication skills with the ability to listen and comprehend and effectively interact with all levels of personnel.
5. Ability to keep accounting and financial records.
6. CO driver's license and a good driving record.
7. Ability to work a modified flexible schedule as needed for court and other department needs.
8. Must have strong decision-making skills.
9. Basic knowledge and skill using computers, office equipment and software applications.
10. High school degree or equivalency. An Associate's degree in criminal justice, human services or closely related field and two years experience in the field of victim assistance which included budgeting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
