City of Seattle is Hiring a Senior Capital Projects Coordinator (2 Positions) Near Seattle, WA

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking two passionate and experienced Senior Capital Projects Coordinators to join our Capital Portfolio Management team! We are seeking two qualified individuals to fill distinct roles within the Senior Capital Projects Coordinator position. In these roles, you will play a key role in initiating and planning vital utility projects that address Seattle's wastewater, drainage, and transportation needs. While both positions share some core responsibilities, each will have a different focus area:

  • Utility Project Coordinator: This position focuses on leading and overseeing wastewater and drainage system improvement projects, particularly in designated Risk Areas within the central and southern parts of Seattle. You will work closely with DWW (Drainage and Wastewater) experts to identify and solve critical system problems, using innovative approaches like Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI).

  • Utility & Transportation Program Coordinator: This position focuses on coordinating utility projects within Major Interagency Projects, with a primary emphasis on collaboration with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT). You will leverage your expertise to identify opportunities to improve SPU's DWW systems within existing SDOT projects, maximizing efficiency and community benefits.

Both Positions:

  • Act as a Line-of-Business (LOB) representative to lead and oversee multiple capital projects throughout the pre-design, design, construction, and close-out phases.

  • Analyze project needs, identify problems, and develop solutions that consider financial, social, and environmental factors.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including engineers, community members, and other government agencies, to ensure successful project delivery.

  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and performance requirements.

  • Develop and present clear technical documents, proposals, and presentations.

  • Foster a culture of racial equity and service equity within your projects.

Utility Project Coordinator:

  • Focuses on leading and overseeing wastewater and drainage system improvement projects, particularly in defined Risk Areas within the central and southern parts of the city.

  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that maximize community benefits and system resiliency, utilizing a combination of grey and green infrastructure strategies.

  • Works independently to define problems, identify project opportunities, write project scopes, and to initiate projects to address prioritized stormwater, wastewater, and CSO system issues.

  • Coordinates with System Planning to maximize opportunity and multiple benefits within capital project programming.

  • Manages budgets specific to projects within the central and southern regions.

  • Reports to the DWW Strategic Advisor 2 overseeing capital programming for the Central and South geographic areas.

Utility & Transportation Program Coordinator:

  • Focuses on coordinating utility projects within Major Interagency Projects, with a primary emphasis on collaboration with the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT).

  • Works within the confines of other agencies' project parameters, analyzing data and information to identify opportunities for SPU's DWW systems within existing SDOT projects.

  • Collaborates with subject matter experts to identify and develop solutions that improve SPU's DWW systems while considering the limitations of ongoing SDOT projects.

  • May work with other LOBs within the Capital Portfolio Management team on overlapping projects.

  • Reports to the Strategic Advisor 2 who manages the Right of Way (ROW) Coordination Program for DWW.

Education: Architecture, Engineering, Business Administration, Urban Planning or related field

Education and Experience Equivalency: Combinations of appropriate education, training, certification, and experience will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability to the minimum education and experience requirements.

Licensure: At the time of appointment must hold a valid Washington State Driver License.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.

  • Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites.

  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended period of time.

  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.

  • Overnight travel may be required.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to write and communicate effectively in both technical and non-technical settings. This includes crafting clear and concise reports, presentations, and project documentation.

  • Project Management: Strong project management skills, including the ability to plan, prioritize, manage budgets, schedules, and risk, and to lead teams to achieve project goals.

  • Problem-Solving: A keen ability to identifyanalyze and scope complex problems, develop innovative solutions, and make sound decisions in a fast-paced environment.

  • Collaboration: Proven ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, both internally and externally.

  • Technical Expertise: A solid understanding of utility systems, project management methodologies, and relevant engineering principles (experience in specific areas like wastewater, Stormwater, or green infrastructure is a plus).

  • Equity Focus: Commitment to incorporating racial and service equity considerations into all aspects of project planning and development.

Workplace Environment: This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office twice a week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their supervisor.

The full salary range for this position is $59.56 $69.48 per hour.
