City of Seattle is Hiring a HVAC Technician Near Seattle, WA

Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Seattle City Light is looking for an experienced HVAC Technician to join the team. This position will perform journey-level mechanical work in the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment (HVAC-R) and related City Light building systems. To perform this work, four (4) industry specific licenses are required as listed in the required qualifications section below. 

HVAC Technicians are stationed in Seattle at the South Service Center; however, the position requires travel to a variety of City Light facilities, including those located in remote locations. The typical length of stay in these remote locations is 2 weeks. The work requires exposure to excessive noise, working at extreme heights, and/or in hazardous and confined areas, and requires following all safety polices, and precautions around workplace equipment. This position is required to carry a cell phone. The position will report to the Facility Technical Supervisor.

  • Operates, maintains, repairs, or replaces chillers, heat pumps, coolers, refrigeration units, variable air volume systems, air handling units, exhaust systems, condensers, evaporators, water heating units, and cooling towers. 
  • Operates, maintains, repairs, or replaces heating coils, strip heaters, base board heaters, thermostats, direct digital control systems, variable frequency control drive units, and electrical control circuits. 
  • Operates, maintains, repairs, and replaces pneumatic HVAC control systems, Hydronic systems, steam distribution systems, condensate return systems and associated building temperature controls. 
  • Responds to routine and emergency HVAC calls from facilities. 
  • Monitors all HVAC systems that are operated and controlled via a direct digital control system and adjusts as necessary. 
  • Prepares and updates schedules and reports. Plans preventive and corrective work on HVAC equipment; maintains a stock of parts and materials to accomplish tasks; orders parts as necessary; and maintains a history of HVAC equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings, and schematics, for troubleshooting, project evaluations, verification of system status, and planning purposes. 
  • Updates plans and drawings as necessary. 
  • Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical, electronic, and pneumatic HVAC-related systems.
Required Qualifications: In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has: 
Minimum Experience/Education Requirement: 
  • Two (2) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of HVACR systems; Or 
  • Two (2) years of technical school HVACR coursework; Or
  •  A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class, relative to the required licenses.
Certifications/Licenses: 
At point of hire, or within 90 days of hire, the following licenses must be provided: (*note – the 90-day post hire option is only available on a case-by-case basis, upon review and confirmation that candidate specific gaps to meet required steps for licensing, can be achieved in 90 days or less.)
1. City of Seattle Grade III Steam Engineer's license 
This license requires at least three (3) years of employment in a position directly responsible for the operation of boilers, or educational substitution for experience that is combined with one (1) year of working experience. 
 
2. City of Seattle Refrigeration Mechanic’s License class A
This license requires three (3) years of experience conducting refrigeration repair and installation, as an apprentice to, or as a journeyman refrigeration and/or air conditioning mechanic; or two (2) years of training in a recognized school of technology, combined with one (1) year of experience in the refrigeration trade; or two (2) years full-tine experience in the refrigeration trade and graduation from a recognized trade school of refrigeration technology. 
 
3. L06A Washington State Electrician Specialty License
This license requires a minimum of 4,000 hours of work experience under the supervision of a journey level electrician to be eligible to obtain the license. 
 
4. EPA CFC Universal Certificate
This certification requires to you pass each of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tests for Types Core, I, II and III.
5. A current Washington State driver's license
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills to diagnose and /or solve problems independently. 
  • The ability to work within a diverse workforce.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting or alone. 
  • Demonstrated ability to follow verbal or written instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, solve medium to complex problems and manage competing priorities.
  • Work experience in maintaining and operating digital control systems.

The full salary range for this position is $57.35 - $62.01.
