City of Seattle is Hiring an Evidence Control Specialist Near Seattle, WA

Position Description:
The Seattle Police Department is actively recruiting for an Evidence Control Specialist or a person with similar experience, to maintain strict accountability and chain of custody for evidence and stolen/found property. The Evidence Unit is part of the Forensic Support Services Section. This position reports to the Detective Sergeant of the Evidence Unit.Position Responsibilities:
  • Picking up evidence from all five precincts and Headquarters. 
  • Receiving, storing, and safeguarding evidence and property in a strict, high-level security environment. 
  • Quality assurance of submitted evidence and property. 
  • Must professionally interact with the general public, sworn and civilian personnel. 
  • Releasing evidence for lab work and court appearances, returning cleared property to owners, and testifying in court if needed.
  • Must maintain accurate computer records. 
  • Strict adherence to department and unit operating procedures is required. 
  • Must keep storage areas organized, which necessitates physically rearranging the storage spaces in the warehouse manually or with large warehouse equipment.
  • Must be able to work inside a refrigerated room and freezer when needed.
  • May occasionally be called out to assist as support staff for crime scene collection.
  • This position will also perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned. 
 Required Qualifications:
Requires one year of inventory, records management, and/or clerical experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience, which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Position Requirements:
  • Must pass a Seattle Police Department background investigation.
  • Pass a drug test and a physical examination by a city approved doctor.
  • Washington State Driver’s License.
  • This position is an onsite position; the employee is expected to perform work in person; there is no remote work. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor.
Work Environment/Physical Demands:
  • Required to work with toxic/hazardous/biohazardous substances.
  • Required to handle equipment such as less lethal weapons, firearms, and ammunition.
  • Required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays (contingent on staffing needs).
  • Required to lift up to 50 pounds.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in police evidence inventory skills are highly desirable; with an emphasis on electronic tracking and utilizing data-based receiving and purging of evidence. 
  • Forklift and Order Picker certification is a plus, but not necessary. 
  • Exemplary computer skills are necessary and must have an aptitude to learn new programs. Experienced in using Excel, Word, and Outlook. 
  • Must work well with others in a team atmosphere.
  • Willingness to handle hazardous substances in a safe and legal manner. 
  • Willingness to process items of evidence, which may be objectionable or unpleasant in nature (e.g. bloody, bug infested, pungent smelling).
  • Willingness to handle firearms, other weapons, and narcotics.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills and interact with the public, attorneys, detectives, and officers.
  • Be highly organized, trustworthy, methodical with an attention to detail along with the ability to triage and multi-task assigned workload.

The full salary range for this position is $38.90 - $42.00 per hour.
New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $38.90 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE) regular position with full benefits. This is a Civil Service position eligible for overtime.
